2026 Italian F4 | Round 4: Mugello | Four winners emerge as Sammalisto extends lead

The fourth round of the 2026 Italian F4 Championship delivered four different winners across an unpredictable weekend at Mugello Circuit. Niccolò Maccagnani controlled Race 1, Ary Bansal secured his maiden championship victory in Race 2, Andy Consani mastered mixed conditions in Race 3 and Kenzo Craigie completed the round with his first Italian F4 win in the Final.

Luka Sammalisto arrived in Tuscany after completing consecutive hat-tricks at Vallelunga and Monza. Although the US Racing driver failed to extend his six-race winning streak, two podium finishes and another fastest lap allowed him to increase his Drivers’ Championship advantage from 47 to 55 points.

Maccagnani produced the strongest overall weekend. The PREMA Racing driver won Race 1, finished second in Race 2 and completed the Final podium, collecting 78 points across the four-day event. Meanwhile, Craigie secured three Rookie victories before converting his front-row Final start into a breakthrough overall triumph.

The championship again attracted 49 drivers, representing 27 nations and 13 teams. Organisers divided the field into three groups, with each driver contesting two of the opening three races before the 36 highest-ranked competitors progressed to the Final.

2026 Italian F4: Mugello: Free Practice: Consani and Bondarev lead Friday running

Andy Consani established the opening benchmark during Friday morning’s 40-minute Free Practice 1 session. The R-ACE GP driver completed a 1:50.256 and defeated Oleksandr Savinkov by 0.103 seconds, while Elia Weiss followed another 0.055s behind.

Florentin Hattemer led the Rookie runners in fourth, with Craigie only 0.010s further back. Ary Bansal, Edward Robinson and Maccagnani completed the leading eight, while Dominik Simek and Teo Borenstein rounded out the top 10.

Several drivers lost lap times through track-limit infringements, while David Walther and Andreas Lo Bue failed to record representative efforts. Nevertheless, Consani’s benchmark gave R-ACE GP the early advantage over US Racing, Jenzer Motorsport and PREMA.

Bondarev takes over during Free Practice 2

Bondarev moved PREMA to the front during the second session by setting a 1:49.547. The Williams Driver Academy member became the only driver to break the 1:50 barrier and finished 0.068s ahead of Craigie.

Sammalisto improved to third and placed 0.194s behind Bondarev, while Consani remained competitive in fourth. Aksoy followed in fifth and led the PREMA Rookie contingent ahead of Savinkov, Maccagnani, Costoya, Kräling and Cotty.

The session produced a closely matched leading group, with only 0.564s separating the top 10. Craigie’s second place also confirmed R-ACE GP’s pace before Qualifying, while PREMA placed four drivers inside the leading eight.

2026 Italian F4: Mugello: Qualifying: Weiss and Cosma-Cristofor share identical benchmark

Organisers divided the 49-car field into two Qualifying series, with the results establishing three race groups. Weiss led the first session with a 1:49.035, finishing 0.333s ahead of Aksoy.

Maccagnani secured third ahead of Bondarev and Sammalisto, while Hattemer led the remaining Rookie drivers in sixth. Bansal followed in seventh, with Arn, Borenstein and Bearman completing the top 10.

Cosma-Cristofor then recorded exactly the same 1:49.035 during the second series. However, Weiss retained the fastest overall position because he had set the time first. Consani finished 0.349s behind Cosma-Cristofor, while Craigie and Costoya completed the leading four.

The result gave Cosma-Cristofor Race 1 pole for the Groups B-C contest, while Weiss earned the leading starting position for Race 2 and Race 3. Maccagnani later started the Final from pole after scoring the highest total across the three preliminary races.

2026 Italian F4: Mugello: Race 1: Maccagnani defeats Craigie after tense restarts

Cosma-Cristofor started Race 1 from pole, but Maccagnani produced the stronger launch and reached Turn 1 in the lead. Craigie also took advantage of the PREMA drivers’ battle and moved into second ahead of Cosma-Cristofor.

Craigie repeatedly placed the leader under pressure, particularly after two Safety Car interventions removed Maccagnani’s advantages. However, the Ferrari Driver Academy member controlled both restarts and defended through the final one-lap sprint.

Sammalisto advanced from the third row and passed Cosma-Cristofor on the main straight to secure third. The Finn also briefly challenged Craigie for second before settling for another podium and recording the fastest lap.

Al Sulaiti initially crossed the line fifth after fighting Repetto and Sammalisto. However, officials handed him a 10-second penalty for a false start, dropping him to 26th and promoting Repetto to fifth. Hattemer, Aksoy, Costoya, Borenstein and Ruta completed the amended top 10.

Further back, contact between Cotty and Savinkov removed both drivers while they contested positions inside the top 20. Westcott consequently won the Women’s Trophy ahead of Ferreira, while Craigie led Repetto and Hattemer in the Rookie classification.

2026 Italian F4: Mugello: Race 2: Bansal claims maiden victory after leaders collide

Weiss started Race 2 from pole and retained first place through the opening exchanges. Consani remained close behind and gradually increased the pressure as the Jenzer driver attempted to deliver his team’s first Italian F4 victory since 2020.

Their contest ended in contact. Weiss suffered a puncture and returned to the pits, while Consani continued with front-wing damage. Officials subsequently handed the R-ACE GP driver a 25-second penalty, dropping him to 22nd in the final classification.

Bansal capitalised after starting ninth. The US Racing driver advanced through the leading battle before taking control and securing his first Italian F4 victory.

Maccagnani followed his opening-race win with second place, giving him 56 points across Saturday’s two contests. Cosma-Cristofor completed the podium and continued his consistent championship campaign, while Bondarev defeated Savinkov for fourth after a close final-lap fight.

Costoya finished sixth and won the Rookie classification ahead of Repetto and Simek. Felbermayr placed 14th overall and led Westcott, Florescu, Ferreira and Panzeri in the Women’s Trophy.

2026 Italian F4: Mugello: Race 3: Consani’s slick-tyre gamble delivers victory

Heavy rain reached Mugello before Race 3, although conditions improved shortly before the scheduled start. Race Control delayed proceedings to assess the circuit, which remained damp and extremely slippery when the drivers eventually left the grid.

Most competitors selected slick tyres, while a smaller group gambled on wets. The wet-shod drivers initially gained a major advantage as the slick runners struggled to generate temperature.

Pole-sitter Weiss went off at Turn 1 on the opening lap and retired, adding another setback to a weekend in which he had already lost the Race 2 lead. Arn, Simek and Al Sulaiti then took turns at the front as repeated Safety Car periods disrupted the contest.

However, the track began drying during the closing stages. Consani found increasing grip on his slick tyres and charged through the order, passing Arn and Al Sulaiti before taking the lead.

Al Sulaiti retained second ahead of Bondarev, who had closed rapidly during the final laps. However, a late Safety Car following Florescu’s trip into the gravel froze the positions and prevented the PREMA driver from making another attack.

Craigie finished fourth and won the Rookie classification ahead of Simek and Aksoy. Felbermayr secured her second Women’s Trophy victory of the round, with Cotty second and Florescu classified third despite causing the final neutralisation.

2026 Italian F4: Mugello: Final: Craigie charges to maiden championship victory

The 36 highest-ranked competitors progressed to the Final, with Maccagnani starting from pole alongside Craigie. However, the R-ACE GP driver initially struggled and dropped to fourth behind three PREMA cars.

Craigie recovered through a series of decisive overtakes. He moved back into the podium places before completing the pass for first and securing his maiden Italian F4 victory.

Sammalisto also advanced after starting sixth. The championship leader battled Maccagnani and Bondarev before taking second, while Maccagnani completed his outstanding weekend with third.

Bondarev finished fourth ahead of Aksoy and Bansal, while Al Sulaiti followed his Race 3 podium with seventh. Consani, Cosma-Cristofor and Repetto completed the top 10.

Craigie also won the Rookie classification ahead of Aksoy and Repetto. Felbermayr finished 27th and claimed her third Women’s Trophy victory of the weekend, moving into the championship lead.

Officials initially kept the result provisional while they conducted additional technical checks on selected cars. Those inspections subsequently found every examined car compliant, confirming the classification without changes.

Sammalisto extends Italian F4 championship lead

Sammalisto added 60 points at Mugello despite failing to win for the first time since the opening Misano round. Third in Race 1, eighth in Race 3 and second in the Final moved him to 288 points.

Cosma-Cristofor collected 52 points through fourth, third and ninth-place finishes. However, he lost another eight points to Sammalisto and now trails by 55.

Aksoy remains third overall and leads the Rookie standings. Bansal climbed to fourth after his maiden victory, while Maccagnani’s 78-point weekend lifted him from outside the top 10 to sixth.

Craigie advanced to seventh through three Rookie victories and his breakthrough Final success. Bondarev also made significant progress and moved to ninth after scoring two podium finishes across the preliminary races.

Aksoy retains Rookie Championship lead

Aksoy remains first in the Rookie Championship with 285 points, although Craigie reduced the difference to 25 through three class victories.

Repetto holds third on 236, while Nielsen and Hattemer remain separated by four points. Costoya follows in sixth, with Arn and Simek level on 169.

Felbermayr takes Women’s Trophy lead

Felbermayr won the Women’s Trophy in Race 2, Race 3 and the Final after Westcott claimed the opening contest. Her three victories moved her to 230 points and gave her a 14-point championship advantage.

Cotty and Westcott share second place on 216 points. Panzeri remains fourth ahead of Ferreira, den Drijver and Florescu.

US Racing retained the Teams’ Championship lead after Bansal won Race 2 and Sammalisto reached two podiums. The German team now holds 750 points and leads PREMA by 94.

PREMA scored strongly through Maccagnani, Cosma-Cristofor and Bondarev, while R-ACE GP enjoyed the most victories through Consani and Craigie. The French team climbed to fourth and now sits only two points behind Jenzer Motorsport.

Van Amersfoort Racing remains fifth, while Trident Motorsport follows on 174 points.

Penalty summary

Officials added 10 seconds to Al Sulaiti’s Race 1 result for a false start, dropping him from fifth to 26th. Lima and Fogaça each received four-place grid penalties for their next appearances, while Walther received a three-place penalty following a separate incident.

Consani received a 25-second penalty for his Race 2 contact with Weiss. The sanction dropped the R-ACE GP driver from the leading group to 22nd, while Weiss required a pit stop because of the resulting puncture.

Savinkov received a five-second penalty in the Final, leaving him 18th in the confirmed classification. Officials initially held the race result under investigation while they conducted additional technical inspections, but every examined car complied with the regulations and the order remained unchanged.

Conclusion: Four winners reshape Italian F4 battle before summer break

Mugello ended Sammalisto’s six-race winning streak, but the championship leader still strengthened his position through disciplined points-scoring. His third-place finish in Race 1 and runner-up result in the Final increased his advantage over Cosma-Cristofor to 55 points.

Maccagnani emerged as the round’s highest scorer after claiming his first victory of the season and adding two further podiums. His 78-point haul moved him to sixth and brought him closer to the leading US Racing group.

Bansal also produced a significant breakthrough by claiming his maiden Italian F4 victory, while Consani’s Race 3 performance rewarded R-ACE GP’s slick-tyre strategy in difficult conditions. Craigie then completed the weekend with an impressive recovery from fourth to win the Final.

Aksoy retains third overall and the Rookie Championship lead, although Craigie’s three class victories reduced the gap. Felbermayr also transformed the Women’s Trophy battle by winning three races and moving ahead of Cotty and Westcott.

Italian F4 will return at Imola from 4–6 September for Round 5. Sammalisto remains in control, but four different Mugello winners demonstrated the range of drivers capable of challenging him during the second half of the season.
