Pascal Wehrlein was crowned Formula E World Champion for a second time after a dramatic 2026 London E-Prix finale saw the title battle go down to the final lap.
Wehrlein entered the last round with a five-point lead over rival Jake Dennis after winning Saturday’s race from pole. However, Round 17 proved more difficult for the Porsche driver as he endured heavy pressure from António Félix da Costa throughout the 35 laps.
Wehrlein’s race continued to unravel in the final stages as he dropped out of the points before making contact with Joel Eriksson and Dennis on Lap 31. While the German driver ultimately crossed the line in P14, Dennis’ P18 and Mitch Evans’ P4 allowed Wehrlein to become the 2026 ABB FIA Formula E Drivers’ World Champion.
Wehrlein: “The happiness is increasing more and more”
Reflecting on his success and the intense title fight in the media pen after the 2026 Formula E London E-Prix finale, Wehrlein shared:
“Yeah, I mean the emotions have cooled down a bit. The happiness is increasing more and more. What we did in this season was, once again, outstanding. I think we could have made our life a bit easier and have decided that championship already earlier, but I guess it would be boring if it was decided earlier as well. Today was intense, a lot of games being played, far beyond the line, but it is what it is. Still kept our head cool and brought it home.”
Beyond the Drivers’ title, Porsche had already secured the 2026 Formula E Manufacturers’ World Championship title at the Tokyo E-Prix. Despite missing out on the Teams’ title to Jaguar TCS Racing, Wehrlein praised the team, highlighting their success in the GEN3 era.
“So yeah, a special thanks to my team, to everyone involved in that project,” he said. “We are the most successful manufacturer in this GEN3 era, most successful driver. Yeah, I couldn’t be happier and more proud of the team. This one is for them. I give everything for them. I put my heart out there and I know it’s the same the other way. They give everything for me and it’s been such a great journey together.”
Family support
Asked about the celebrations and his family’s support, Wehrlein explained how much their support means to him and how important it is to have people he can rely on.
“Yeah, of course, you know. I know how much my family and everyone is rooting for me and supporting me there. I think they feel it even more intense than myself. Obviously, they are also worried about safety and stuff, you know, which is not even in my mind, but they are cheering for me to, first of all, be safe out there, but then also to be successful.”
He added: “I do it for them also. Yeah, I have so many people. I know they would die for me and same the other way around. That’s what matters to me. I like the deep relationships and yeah, I know I have a couple of people I can really rely on and that’s what’s important.”
Wehrlein reflects on Porsche’s success
Further speaking about Porsche’s strong season and its ability to maintain its high standard under pressure in the final rounds, Wehrlein said:
“I’m so proud of how we executed this weekend, how we didn’t crack under pressure. We set the bar really high in the first 15 races of the season, which was our baseline coming into the final round, and today, we finished the job.”
Looking back on his championship-winning campaign, Wehrlein finished Season 12 with six podiums, including three victories, and 169 championship points. Meanwhile, teammate Nico Müller also played a key role in Porsche’s campaign, contributing a win and a podium alongside a consistent run of points-scoring finishes.
With this in mind, Wehrlein concluded: “I want to thank everyone in the team and everyone back at the factory who helped build this car. We are the most successful manufacturer in the GEN3 era and have won so many championships. I love my team. I love everyone working with me and believing in me. A very special thanks also to Nico for how much he contributed to this title. Tonight, we will celebrate, but then: bring on GEN4.”
