FIA Formula 2 (F2) unveiled its new-generation car at Monza earlier today, introducing the championship’s latest challengers ahead of its debut for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 seasons.
Building on the current generation of cars, the new car retains the 2026 Dallara chassis as a cost-saving measure but features a redesigned front and rear wing aimed at promoting closer racing and allowing drivers to follow more closely, aligning with the new generation of Formula 1 cars.
Retaining its 3.4-litre turbocharged Mecachrome engine, the championship will continue to run on Aramco’s sustainable fuel and Pirelli tyres, with the Italian manufacturer remaining Formula 2’s exclusive tyre supplier.
While the braking, steering and cockpit ergonomics remain largely unchanged, the car introduces an exciting new technical evolution.
The addition of an on-board starter from 2027
One of the biggest evolutions of the new-generation car is the addition of an onboard starter. Currently, drivers who stall and cannot restart their cars require assistance from a starter shaft. To accommodate the new system, Hewland has developed an evolution of the current gearbox that integrates an onboard starter.

Ushering in a new era of Formula 2, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali, Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel and several drivers attended the launch at Monza earlier today.
