The 2026 Eurocup-3 season enters a potentially decisive stage at the Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto from 25–27 September, with James Egozi facing his first opportunity to secure the Drivers’ Championship.
Egozi arrives in Andalusia with 235 points and a 107-point advantage over Ean Eyckmans following his seventh victory of the season at Silverstone. However, while the American controls the title fight, only nine points separate Eyckmans, Keanu Al Azhari and René Lammers in the increasingly close battle behind him.
Jerez therefore presents two contrasting championship fights. Importantly, Egozi could leave Spain with the title already secured, while his nearest rivals remain separated by margins small enough for one Qualifying session, podium or fastest lap to significantly alter their positions.
Egozi arrives at Jerez with first Eurocup-3 title opportunity
Egozi entered Round 5 at Silverstone with a 93-point championship advantage after dominating the previous event at Monza. Although Al Azhari ended his four-race winning streak in Britain, the Palou Motorsport driver still strengthened his position.
The American finished third in Race 1 and claimed the fastest lap before responding with victory and another fastest lap in Race 2. Consequently, he scored 42 points across the weekend and increased his championship total from 193 to 235.
More importantly, Egozi extended his lead from 93 to 107 points. With only Jerez, the Hungaroring and Barcelona remaining, that advantage gives him his first opportunity to mathematically secure the championship.
Egozi needs to leave Jerez at least 113 points ahead of the driver occupying second place. Therefore, he must increase his current advantage by at least six points across the weekend to secure the title before Eurocup-3 heads to Hungary.
His position gives him considerable control over the situation. Nevertheless, Jerez still offers enough points for his rivals to delay the championship battle, particularly if Egozi encounters problems during Qualifying or either race.
Eyckmans leads increasingly close battle for second
While Egozi has established a substantial advantage at the front, the fight behind him tightened considerably at Silverstone.
Eyckmans remains second in the Drivers’ Championship after Round 5 with 128 points. The MP Motorsport rookie finished fifth in Race 1 before taking second on Sunday, adding 28 points to his championship total.
However, Al Azhari now sits only seven points behind him after producing his strongest weekend of the regular season.
The Hitech driver claimed pole position for both Silverstone races and converted his first into victory. He looked set to add another major result on Sunday before front-wing problems dropped him from second to seventh during the closing stages.
Nevertheless, his 35-point weekend moved him from fourth to third in the standings with 121 points.
Lammers follows another two points behind on 119. The MP Motorsport rookie finished second in Race 1 before taking fourth on Sunday, leaving only nine points between the three drivers from second to fourth.
As a result, every available point carries increased significance at Jerez. Even if Egozi moves beyond reach, the battle directly behind him could continue deep into the final two rounds.
Al Azhari carries Silverstone momentum into Spain
Al Azhari arrives at Jerez with renewed momentum after becoming the first driver since Portimão to prevent Egozi from winning Race 1 or Race 2 during a Eurocup-3 weekend.
His Silverstone performance started with two pole positions before he controlled Race 1 from the front. That victory represented his second main-race win of the season and moved him firmly back into contention for second in the championship.
However, his Sunday setback prevented him from making even greater progress. Al Azhari ran second before front-wing problems struck with two laps remaining, ultimately leaving him seventh.
Despite that disappointment, Silverstone demonstrated that Hitech can challenge Palou Motorsport and MP Motorsport at the front. Another strong Qualifying performance at Jerez could therefore give Al Azhari an opportunity to move ahead of Eyckmans.
His challenge will centre on converting outright pace into two complete results. With only seven points separating him from second, the margins have become small enough that bonus points for pole positions and fastest laps could influence the order.
Lammers remains firmly in fight after another podium
Lammers also enters Jerez with an opportunity to move into second after continuing his consistent run at Silverstone.
The Dutch rookie took his third consecutive podium when he finished second behind Al Azhari in Race 1. He then added fourth in Race 2, increasing his championship total to 119.
Lammers has therefore remained within striking distance despite Al Azhari moving ahead of him in the standings. Only two points separate the pair, while Eyckmans sits nine ahead.
MP Motorsport consequently holds two of the three positions immediately behind Egozi. That gives the Dutch team considerable strength as it attempts to reduce Palou Motorsport’s advantage in the Teams’ Championship.
However, the close margins also mean Eyckmans and Lammers will compete directly against each other for second. Both need substantial points at Jerez to delay Egozi’s title confirmation, while each also has an opportunity to establish an advantage within their own battle.
Dall’Agnol strengthens fifth ahead of Jerez
Behind the leading four, Heitor Dall’Agnol has created some breathing room in fifth.
The Palou Motorsport rookie bounced back from a point-less Monza weekend by scoring in both Silverstone races. He finished sixth on Saturday before climbing onto the podium with third in Race 2, increasing his total to 91 points.
Dall’Agnol now sits 23 points ahead of Kacper Sztuka, who holds sixth with 68. Alex Powell follows on 62, while Rafaël Pérard remains close behind with 58.
Patrick Heuzenroeder occupies ninth with 51 points, only two ahead of Gianmarco Pradel. The MP Motorsport driver moved into the championship top 10 after scoring in both Silverstone races.
Although that group remains some distance behind the championship top four, the margins within it leave significant room for movement across the final three rounds.
Palou Motorsport holds 83-point Teams’ Championship lead
Palou Motorsport also arrives in Spain with a substantial advantage in the Teams’ Championship.
Egozi and Dall’Agnol helped the Spanish squad increase its total to 350 points at Silverstone. MP Motorsport remains second on 267, leaving 83 points between the leading two teams.
MP Motorsport can rely on Eyckmans and Lammers, who both sit inside the top four of the Drivers’ Championship. Pradel has also moved into the championship top 10 after another points-scoring weekend at Silverstone.
Meanwhile, an even closer fight has developed for third. Hitech moved ahead of Griffin Core following Al Azhari’s victory and now holds 155 points. Griffin Core follows only three points behind on 152.
Jerez could therefore prove important across both championship battles. Palou Motorsport has an opportunity to move closer to the Teams’ title, while Hitech and Griffin Core enter the weekend almost level in the fight for third.
Eurocup-3 returns to familiar Jerez
Unlike Silverstone, Jerez represents familiar territory for Eurocup-3. The Andalusian circuit has featured during every season since the championship launched in 2023.
The 4.4-kilometre Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto combines technical sections with several significant braking zones. Consequently, drivers need a car that responds accurately through changes of direction while remaining stable when braking from higher speeds.
Turn 1 immediately provides one of the clearest overtaking opportunities. Drivers arrive at considerable speed before braking for the right-hander, making a strong exit from the final corner particularly important when attacking along the main straight.
Dry Sack provides another major opportunity later in the lap. The heavy braking zone at the end of the back straight gives drivers the chance to use the slipstream before attempting a move into the hairpin.
Those characteristics create a significantly different challenge from Silverstone. Whereas the British circuit placed particular emphasis on aerodynamic confidence through sustained high-speed corners, Jerez requires drivers to combine rhythm with precision across a more technical lap.
Qualifying could prove decisive in championship battle
Qualifying carries particular importance with the championship potentially on the line.
The relatively technical nature of Jerez can make following closely difficult through some sections, increasing the value of track position. Drivers who qualify near the front can also avoid some of the risks associated with battling through a closely packed midfield.
For Egozi, strong Qualifying sessions would provide an opportunity to control his championship situation from the front rather than relying on recovery drives. However, Eyckmans, Al Azhari and Lammers need to maximise the same sessions if they want to reduce his advantage.
Al Azhari demonstrated the potential importance of Qualifying at Silverstone. His two pole positions placed him at the front for both races and provided two additional championship points before the races even began.
With only nine points separating second through fourth, those bonus points could again prove important at Jerez.
Jerez offers several overtaking opportunities
Although Qualifying remains important, Jerez provides opportunities for drivers to make progress during the races.
The main straight creates the first significant chance as drivers approach Turn 1. A strong run through the final corner can allow a chasing driver to use the slipstream before moving alongside under braking.
The back straight leading towards Dry Sack provides another important opportunity. Drivers can remain close through the preceding section before using the tow and attacking under heavy braking.
However, overtaking will still require drivers to position their cars carefully several corners beforehand. Losing momentum through Jerez’s technical sections can leave a driver too far behind to attack, even with the benefit of the slipstream.
Tyre management could also influence the races. Maintaining performance across the full distance will become particularly important if drivers spend extended periods following closely or defending from rivals.
Jerez holds recent championship significance
Jerez played a decisive role during the 2025 Eurocup-3 title battle.
Mattia Colnaghi arrived at the penultimate round with an opportunity to secure the championship and completed the job after finishing third in Race 1 before dominating Race 2. His victory gave him an unassailable advantage and made him the first driver in Eurocup-3 history to secure the Drivers’ Championship before the final round.
MP Motorsport also clinched the Teams’ Championship during the same weekend, completing a title double before the season finale.
One year later, Jerez could again crown a champion. Egozi arrives one round earlier in the campaign than Colnaghi did in 2025, but his 107-point advantage has already created the opportunity to settle the title before the final two events.
Final three rounds begin with championship on the line
Egozi enters Jerez with the strongest championship position of any driver this season. His seven victories and consistent scoring have built a 107-point advantage, leaving him only six points short of the margin he needs to secure the championship this weekend.
However, his rivals still have an opportunity to delay that outcome. Eyckmans needs to protect second while reducing Egozi’s advantage, while Al Azhari and Lammers remain close enough to overhaul him with one particularly strong weekend.
Their own fight could prove equally significant. Only nine points cover second through fourth, ensuring that every pole position, fastest lap and race result can change the order.
Meanwhile, Palou Motorsport carries an 83-point Teams’ Championship advantage into Spain, while Hitech and Griffin Core remain separated by only three points in third and fourth.
After Silverstone introduced Eurocup-3 to a new circuit, Jerez brings the championship back to one of its most familiar venues. This time, however, the stakes have increased considerably. Egozi has his first opportunity to become the 2026 Eurocup-3 champion, while the drivers behind him arrive in Andalusia knowing they must respond if they want to keep the title fight alive beyond Round 6.
