George Russell continues his streak of unfortunate luck at the 2026 F1 Malaysia race, with a DNF from P3. After a difficult qualifying session saw Russell start the race from P7, he charged through the field on intermediate tyres, getting up to P2 on the opening lap.
Russell and teammate Kimi Antonelli battled with Max Verstappen for the race lead early doors. Unfortunately for him, he lacked pace compared to the other two drivers as they eased away on the dry tyres. While the Brit seemed on course to score an easy P3 podium finish, he stopped on track on Lap 50. Russell was forced to retire from the race due to an engine issue.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Russell reflected on his DNF following the 2026 F1 Malaysia race.
Russell on DNF at 2026 F1 Malaysia race
As of the 2026 F1 Malaysia race, George Russell has suffered three DNFs — two resulting from mechanical issues.
The British driver expressed his thoughts post-race. He stated he is used to the feeling of disappointment this season.
“I mean, you’ve almost got to laugh. It’s beyond disappointment. It’s just so many times this season, it’s happened. Of course, it’s a real shame, but just keep on fighting, just keep on trying to go. But the podium, of course, looked very certain.
“Solid race — not amazing race — but solid race. But yeah, not the first time, so I’m pretty used to this feeling and these questions, let’s say.”
Championship fight over?
Following his DNF at the 2026 F1 Malaysia race, Russell sits 84 points behind Antonelli in the World Drivers’ Championship. It seems that the young Italian is destined to take home the title.
When asked if it’s possible to continue challenging his teammate for the championship, Russell responded earnestly. He stated luck has not been on his side this season.
“I don’t need to say I think it’s gone or whatever, but it’s exceptionally unlikely — and that’s just the reality. I knew if I wanted to come back, I needed luck on my side. Unfortunately, I’ve had luck not on my side.
“A three-point loss today, being behind Kimi [Antonelli], turned into an 18-point loss. And if the issue was on the other side, it would have been an 18-point gain. So it’s a real shame, but that’s just how it is.”
