Round 17 began with a busy Friday as George Russell topped FP1 and Max Verstappen secured pole in Sprint Qualifying. As attention turned to the Sprint Race, Verstappen lined up at the front, with Russell in P2 and Charles Leclerc in P3.
Heavy rain and standing water delayed the formation lap until 17:30 local time. Russell got a stronger launch at lights out, with Verstappen falling down to P2. However, drama unfolded early when Russell spun and hit the wall on the main straight, triggering a Safety Car. Lance Stroll and Sergio Pérez also retired following contact, while Isack Hadjar suffered a power unit issue. Franco Colapinto soon joined the DNF list due to a mechanical issue.
Verstappen took the field back to racing speeds on Lap 6, holding off Lewis Hamilton in P2. Gabriel Bortoleto, Alex Albon, and Valtteri Bottas made contact at the restart, forcing Bortoleto and Bottas to retire in the pits. Meanwhile, Race Control will investigate Arvid Lindblad post-session for driving the wrong way up the track after a lap-one spin.
By Lap 13, Verstappen remained in control, extending his lead as Hamilton struggled to keep up. Albon later retired with five laps remaining. Late disaster struck for McLaren as Norris and Piastri made contact, leaving Piastri with a DNF as Norris finished P8.
Despite losing the lead at lights out, Verstappen crossed the chequered flag first, claiming Sprint Race victory as Hamilton and Piastri completed the podium.
