Luca Engstler secured his maiden DTM pole position in a rain-affected Qualifying 1 session at the Hockenheimring on Saturday morning. The ABT Sportsline driver mastered the challenging conditions to claim the top spot ahead of Lucas Auer, while championship leader Thomas Preining finished third to strengthen his position in the 2026 title fight.

With six drivers still mathematically in contention for the championship heading into the final weekend, the opening qualifying session carried significant importance. Wet conditions added another challenge as drivers battled for grip and crucial grid positions ahead of Saturday’s race.

Engstler masters the wet conditions to secure his maiden pole

Engstler delivered an impressive performance in difficult conditions during Qualifying 1 at the Hockenheimring to take the first pole position of his DTM career.

The Lamborghini driver emerged on top of a competitive session in which the changing track conditions demanded precision and confidence. His performance secured him the best possible starting position for the opening race of the season finale. Auer also demonstrated strong pace in his Mercedes-AMG GT3, securing second place on the grid and joining Engstler on the front row.

Preining gains an advantage in the championship battle

While Engstler celebrated his qualifying breakthrough, Preining emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries in the championship fight. The Manthey Porsche driver entered the final weekend leading the standings and maintained his composure in the challenging conditions. His third-place finish gave him a strong starting position for Saturday’s race and an important advantage over his title rivals.

With qualifying results playing a role in the championship standings, every position mattered as the remaining contenders fought to keep their hopes alive.

Tyre strategy proves decisive on a drying circuit

The unpredictable weather created a strategic challenge for teams throughout the 20-minute session. With the circuit still damp at the start of qualifying, several drivers initially opted for wet-weather tyres before considering a switch to slicks as conditions improved. However, the gamble failed to deliver the expected advantage, prompting drivers to return to wet tyres.

Engstler made the most of the conditions and set a benchmark time of 1:47.048. Auer secured second with a late improvement, finishing 0.407 seconds behind the Lamborghini driver, while Preining ended the session a further 0.052 seconds adrift. Preining also faced a setback when officials deleted his fastest lap for exceeding track limits. Nevertheless, the Austrian recovered sufficiently to secure third place and collect a valuable championship point.

Title rivals struggle to match Preining

Further down the order, several championship contenders endured a frustrating qualifying session. Maro Engel struggled to capitalise on his decision to run slick tyres early in the session. The Mercedes-AMG driver eventually finished seventh, 0.939 seconds behind Engstler, leaving him with considerable work to do in Saturday’s race.

Marco Wittmann also struggled with the tyre strategy. The Schubert Motorsport BMW driver could only manage 11th place, finishing 1.381 seconds off the fastest time. Their difficulties allowed Preining to extend his championship advantage over Engel to 24 points, with 53 points still available across the remainder of the weekend.

Meanwhile, Thierry Vermeulen secured fourth for Emil Frey Racing, ahead of Preining’s Manthey teammate Ricardo Feller in fifth. Mirko Bortolotti completed the top six for GRT Lamborghini.

Engstler leads the field into Saturday’s race

Engstler’s maiden pole position provided a memorable start to the final DTM weekend of the season and placed him in an excellent position to challenge for his third victory of the campaign.

However, Preining’s performance carried significant implications for the championship. By qualifying ahead of his closest title rivals, the Porsche driver increased his advantage and put himself in a strong position to move closer to securing the 2026 DTM title.

With unpredictable weather conditions and valuable championship points still at stake, Saturday’s opening race promised another important chapter in the title battle at Hockenheim.
