The family of Alan Jones have confirmed that the 1980 F1 World Champion passed away early on Thursday morning Australian time.
He made his debut at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. His first victory would follow two years later in Austria. However, his move to Williams would provide him with the platform to become a regular challenger for podiums and wins.
In 1980, the ultimate glory arrived. Alan Jones became World Champion after a tremendous campaign, winning five races along the way. It was also history for Williams as the Australian was their first ever F1 Drivers’ Champion.
After 12 Grand Prix wins across 11 years, his final start was at the 1986 Australian GP.
Post-F1, he competed at Le Mans and did many seasons in the Australian Supercars championship. The driver from Melbourne was also a regular F1 analyst on Australian television through the 1990s and into the 21st century.
