After the F1 British GP and just before the mid-season break, Carlos Sainz reflected on what has been a rollercoaster first half of the season. Now racing with Williams, the Spaniard has faced several DNFs and crashes beyond his control, as he stated in a post-race interview.
Unexpected crash following the bad luck
Carlos Sainz was having a relaxed race, fighting for eighth place, after a streak of bad luck that finally seemed to be fading. However, his luck didn’t last long. The Monegasque driver, once his teammate, lost control of his car and collided with the Spaniard.
“I had a good race, I was having a very solid race, staying out of trouble, survival mode, and then when we went onto the slicks I was P8, fighting for P7 I think.“Charles was the car in Turn 15, and when he lost it he crashed into me and went backwards from there with damage.”
Sainz explained that a string of unfortunate events has marked the first half of his season, most of them completely out of his control. Whether it’s a promising qualifying session or a race where Williams Racing seems well-positioned to fight for points, something always seems to get in the way.
This ongoing misfortune is beginning to take a visible toll on Sainz. His post-race interviews reflect growing frustration. While there’s still half a season to go, the driver is hoping for a change in fortune, not just for the sake of results, but for the mental reset.
“Story of my season, every time we’re on to score good points and having a solid weekend, something out of our control happens and [I’m] getting a bit frustrated, tired with this season because every time there’s something different when we’re about to get good points.”
Looking ahead with hope for the second half of the season
As the Williams Racing driver stated, he knows he is driving his best, but the constant stream of events outside his control has begun to take a toll. Carlos Sainz needs a break from this ongoing run of bad luck.
The Spaniard hopes the pause will help him reset and finally bring an end to the streak of misfortune that has followed both him and the team in recent races.
“I’m driving well, doing everything I can. But when there’s so many things happening out of your control, it makes you want to have a bit of a break to see if this run of bad luck and things that keep happening to us stop somehow and we start having a cleaner second half of the season.”
Sainz also reflected on the need to hit pause and reset ahead of the second half of the season, emphasising how unprecedented this difficult stretch has been for him. He explained that he had never experienced such a run of consecutive bad events for numerous races.
“I’ve never had such a run of so many bad things happening to you consecutively in a run of five, six, seven, eight races like we’ve been [experiencing]. It starts to be really frustrating.”
