A crash with Nissan’s Sérgio Sette Câmara saw Cupra Kiro’s David Beckmann retire from Race 1 of the 2025 Berlin E-Prix, taking him out of points after what had seemed a promising round. Despite this, the 25-year-old remains optimistic. Having shown his strong pace around the Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit, Beckmann believes that points are possible in Race 2 on Sunday.
An unexpected crash with Sette Câmara
Following the race, Beckmann reflected on the incident with Sette Câmara. While speaking to Pit Debrief, the German suggested that a misjudgment was the main culprit behind the incident, noting the mixed wet-and-dry track. However, he lamented the disastrous effects on his own race.
“Sergio activated Attack Mode and I overtook him on the inside. Then he really wanted to get past in Turn 3… I think he simply misjudged his braking point, because it was still a bit wet on the inside. It was dry on the racing line. He probably braked on the same reference as on the dry tarmac.”
“Then his rear tyres probably locked up, and he crashed into me. That’s what I saw on the replay. I really didn’t expect it, then I saw him in the inside mirror, then I left a bit of space so that we could both get through the corner, but it wasn’t enough.”
“I got hit straight away and then again. Then the car was ruined too,” he concluded
Good pace until the incident with Sette Câmara
Despite the unfortunate end, Beckmann could find a silver lining. When asked about his satisfaction with his pace, the German explained that there had been potential for points.
“It was actually very good until then, the pace was very good, and we still had both attack modes. That would have been a big advantage, because the track dried out at the end, and we would have had a big advantage to make up a lot of time. I think there would have been a lot of potential. Definitely points.”
Beckmann also confirmed that the team had used a preferred strategy, waiting until later in the race to use their Attack Mode.
“Yes, exactly, that was a strategy that we tend to use when the track dries out a bit.”
Beckmann hopes for better weather and wants to score points
After a wet Saturday, Beckmann hopes that Sunday will be better, noting the more comfortable conditions for the fans alongside the positive effect on his performance.
“I hope the weather is a bit better tomorrow for the fans, that would be nice”, Beckmann said. “I think we were a bit stronger in the dry than the rain, in any case, because FP1 was actually quite good. But yes, let’s see what the weather is like tomorrow. Anything is possible. Today would have been a good race without the contact, and we’ll attack again tomorrow.”
Regarding the possibility for points in Race 2, Beckmann is optimistic: “Unless something unpredictable happens tomorrow, I think (it’s possible). It would have been possible today too.”
