Mick Schumacher shared that he is in touch with the Cadillac F1 team to return to the sport for 2026.
A possible nominee for the seat
Since Formula 1 approved Cadillac to become the eleventh team to compete in its dynamic from 2026 and onwards, everyone has been speculating who will get to race in the two empty seats.
While many drivers aspire to enter the exclusive stage of F1 from the remainder series, former F1 drivers who left the sport due to not being able to find a seat also want to use this opportunity to return to full time racing.
Former Formula 1 driver Mick Schumacher is one of these drivers who would like to seize his chance of coming back. The German driver previously raced for Haas for two years. At the end of the 2022 season, the American team decided to part ways with Schumacher, who was left seatless for the 2023 season. In 2024, Mercedes signed the young German driver as their reserve driver. Meanwhile he also started his World Endurance Championship career with Alpine.
Though Schumacher made some marks in WEC, he was mentally still in Formula 1. Not having lost his hopes of returning to F1, naturally it is thought Mick Schumacher to be one of the nominees for the newest addition to the grid.
Cadillac still hasn’t announced its driver lineup for 2026, which has long been a subject of curiosity for awhile. The team principal of the Cadillac F1 team, Graeme Lowdon, previously stated that there are 6 to 10 drivers’ names on their list as potential nominees for their two empty seats.
Mick Schumacher recently told the Brazilian edition of Motorsport.com that he is one of the drivers who have been negotiating with the new Cadillac F1 squad. According to the German driver, the process has been going quite well.
“Yes, of course, discussions are ongoing. The communication has been very positive so far.
“And they’ve already hired a fantastic number of people for it. It’s an honour to be part of it, to negotiate with them, and a great position to be in.”
“Not a place to prove something”
The names that have been linked with Cadillac were mostly composed of drivers who couldn’t find a seat in the sport for the 2025 season. Current Mercedes reserve driver Valtteri Bottas and former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez are the most anticipated ones among these names.
These drivers’ current career points led people to think that in case they sign a contract with Cadillac, it will be an opportunity for them to prove themselves. However, Lowdon explicitly disagreed with this widespread opinion and stated that Cadillac is not there for drivers who want to showcase a personal ambition rather than a team mentality.
“Everyone wants to prove something else again.
“I never look at that as the biggest motivator. Our team is not there as a vehicle for someone to prove a point.
“Our team is there to provide a position on the pitch, if you like. For someone to prove what they can do for sure, but it’s not the vehicle to show the world, prove a point or whatever.
“The driver is there to do the best that they possibly can for their team, and they should be motivated for the team around them as well.
“So, I’m less keen on people who kind of want to prove a personal point.”
