The Italian GP Sprint Race at Monza not only produced on-track drama but also reshaped the 2025 F2 Championship standings. With penalties applied and the race settled, Leonardo Fornaroli strengthened his lead at the top, while rivals jostled for position in a fiercely contested title fight.
Fornaroli capitalises on home soil
Leonardo Fornaroli delighted the home crowd by converting his strong pace into victory. After starting third, he seized the lead on Lap 8 and never relinquished control. His performance secured ten crucial points, moving him to 164 points in the standings.
By winning on home soil, Fornaroli extended his championship advantage from 17 to 24 points, placing himself firmly in command of the title fight heading into the Feature Race.
Verschoor climbs to second as Crawford loses ground
Richard Verschoor delivered a strong recovery drive after a difficult qualifying session. Despite losing his best lap time on Friday and starting further back than expected, he climbed through the field to finish fourth on the road.
Benefiting from penalties ahead, Verschoor now holds 140 points, which elevates him to second in the championship. He sits four points clear of Jak Crawford, who endured a quieter Sprint and failed to score. Starting mid-pack, he slipped backwards during the Sprint and finished outside the points in 16th.
As a result, Crawford remains on 137 points and drops to third overall. His inability to match Fornaroli’s consistency has allowed Verschoor to overtake him in the standings.
Meanwhile, Alex Dunne suffered a blow in Monza after receiving a ten-second penalty for forcing Kush Maini off the track. The sanction dropped him to 13th place and denied him a points-scoring finish.
Despite the setback, Dunne retains 124 points, holding onto fifth in the standings. However, rivals behind him, particularly Lindblad, have closed the gap, increasing the pressure as the season moves forward.
Midfield tightens with Lindblad and Staněk
Arvid Lindblad showcased his speed once again, climbing into the podium places and finishing second. His result moved him onto 101 points, closing in on Pepe Martí, who remains seventh with 97 points.
Roman Staněk also delivered valuable points, finishing fifth and moving his tally to 81 points. His performance keeps him in striking distance of the top seven as the season progresses.
Beganovic and Minì gain, Dürksen surges
Dino Beganovic started on pole but slipped back, later receiving a five-second penalty for a Virtual Safety Car infringement. He finished sixth on the road but dropped a place to seventh after classification. Nonetheless, he moved his tally to 61 points, holding 11th overall.
Gabriele Minì collected points for eighth, bringing his total to 37 points, while Joshua Dürksen benefited from penalties ahead to snatch his third F2 podium of the year. The Paraguayan driver jumped to 29 points, climbing to 13th in the championship.
Lower half of the table
Further down, Sebastián Montoya holds steady in ninth overall on 72 points, level with Victor Martins, who endured another difficult Sprint and left Monza without adding to his tally of 69 points. Kush Maini’s retirement leaves him stranded on 26 points, just ahead of Ritomo Miyata on 25 and Oliver Goethe on 23. Rafael Villagómez remains in 17th on 11 points, while Amaury Cordeel sits 18th with 3. At the bottom, Sami Meguetounif remains on 2 points after his clash with Dunne, while John Bennett, Max Esterson, and Cian Shields continue to chase their first points of the season.
Championship picture after the 2025 Monza F2 Sprint Race
After Monza’s Sprint Race, the standings show Fornaroli consolidating his lead, Verschoor emerging as his nearest rival, and Crawford slipping under pressure. The midfield battle remains intense, with Lindblad, Martí, and Staněk separated by fewer than 25 points.
With the Feature Race still to come, every driver faces both opportunity and risk. Fornaroli holds momentum, but the chasing pack knows that a single mistake could reopen the fight.
