Luke Browning had a career-changing weekend at the Italian GP. After achieving his first ever Formula 2 pole position and Feature Race win in one fell swoop, the Hitech TGR driver spoke on his achievement and what it means for his championship hopes.

Pleased with win after difficult Sprint Race

Currently, the Williams Racing Driver Academy Member is within touching distance of the Formula 2 title, only 21 points behind the leader. He reflected on what this strong result means for his F2 championship fight.

“It’s amazing. I think we’ve now got to keep this mindset going into the next race. It’s the Championship we’re after, not just a race win, but it does feel very, very cool to achieve.”

The weekend was not entirely smooth sailing for the British driver. Starting the Sprint Race in P10, he only just crossed the line in the final points scoring position, ultimately benefiting from incidents ahead of him. Though pleased with the weekend overall, he highlighted that it gave him many learnings to take forward.

“Especially after taking such a big step from where we were in the Sprint Race to where we were today. Just very, very grateful to the team. But just because we had a good weekend this time around, doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy next weekend. So, we’ll keep focused on Baku and going forward.”

Hoping for another strong result in Baku

Browning reviewed his overall performance in the Italian GP Feature Race. Notably, he shared his belief that his strong start and tyre choice led to his win.

“The start was probably the best start I’ve ever had. Just absolutely rocketed off the line and I didn’t even have to defend into T1, which is a nice thing. The Option pace was super quick. I think we were equally quick on the Prime and we excelled when it came to our pace there, which is where we were able to create some distance. Just great preparation by the team and we were right where we needed to be this weekend.”

The next round of the 2025 Formula 2 season is the Azerbaijan GP in Baku. Browning shared his excitement for the race, hoping to maintain his current form and replicate the strong results of the past.

“Feeling very strong going into Baku. I drove there last year and had a fantastic result, in the points in my first race in Formula 2. I’m looking forward to going back there. I really like the track, street circuits are some of my favourites. So we’ll be trying our best and we’ll see what happens.”
