Following an unfortunate incident in Qualifying, Pierre Gasly started his F1 Azerbaijan GP from P18, keeping that position until the checkered flag. Ever since the beginning of the race weekend, it was clear that Alpine would be struggling. Both the Frenchman and his teammate were out in Q1 after separate issues.
In terms of the Drivers’ Championship, Gasly currently sits in P16 with 20 points on the board. He earned his best result at the F1 British GP, finishing sixth and bringing home 8 points. Thanks to his experience behind the wheel with Alpine, Pierre Gasly manages to take advantage of any point-scoring opportunities.
Disappointing race outcome
Despite the unfavourable starting position, Gasly gave it his all during the F1 Azerbaijan GP. While it was not enough to gain him a spot in the top 10, the Frenchman admitted the difficulty of his circumstances. According to him, the A525 lacks the pace to challenge for more:
“Yeah, I think it’s… What we can try, I mean, at the moment we obviously have no pace, so… It doesn’t make our life very easy,” explained Gasly to selected medias post race.
Clearly defeated after the discouraging result, the Alpine driver went on to share the aspects that harmed his race the most. Moreover, Pierre Gasly made a point to highlight the bad luck streak that has been following the team, which was also present at the F1 Azerbaijan GP.
“Bumps. Long straights. And, yeah, I mean, we’ve never really been strong around here. So I think there’s obviously some stuff we don’t do quite well. I think overall, the last four or five weekends have been more difficult. So we really want to work with the team to try to get back into a better place. But, yeah, this weekend was clearly not good.”
Improving for the next rounds
Disappointment after disappointment surrounded the French team throughout the 2025 season. As a result, the 29-year-old believes a comeback will not be possible, at least in the near future. Recognising how behind they are in comparison to the other teams, Gasly stated that the F1 Azerbaijan GP just showcased that.
“We’re so far back, honestly, that… Yeah, I mean, it’s… At the moment it’s… Yeah, we just need some time to analyse everything and try to work things out. But, yeah, it’s just… Clearly, it didn’t work this weekend.”
The Frenchman went on to explain that his focus will be on moving on and not letting the rough results get to him. His frustrations were obvious as he spoke of a possible recovery. Nevertheless, Pierre Gasly acknowledged his mistake as a personal issue, triggered by the difficulty of his position:
“I mean, I know it’s going to be tough. That’s why I think it’s just important for me to move on and just try to work with the team on what we can do to improve short term. But we’re not going to go from P19 to suddenly finding five-tenths of lap time.
“I think we know what works and what doesn’t, but I’m sure there are still things we can do better. And also on my side, there are things. Yesterday I did a mistake that I should not do, so I keep working. But, yeah, honestly, it’s quite tough when you see the gap with the other cars at the moment.”
