Pierre Gasly was an unlucky man the 2025 F1 Las Vegas GP. Or in any Las Vegas GP for that matter. Coming off yet another strong qualifying in Sin City, the Frenchman was spun around in turn 1. The subsequent damage to his diffuser meant his race was never going to be on. Eventually he had to settle for 13th place.
Miserable day for Gasly
Gasly’s assessment of the situation was clear: “Just got spun around and my diffuser got smashed at the back.
“So a long f***ing flight to end up spun around on Saturday and get another unlucky race in Vegas for me.
“It’s been three years in a row where I have very strong quali and it doesn’t really translate into the race. So it’s a bit disappointing but that’s what it is.”
Altough he felt for the first few metres he could finally have a good result in Vegas, it wasn’t meant to be.
“Honestly, it’s just one of those which… I got into turn one, I was cornering and then I just got hit from the back and spun, went back and…
“I mean, it’s not like our car’s got huge downforce on it, so on top of that you get damaged. It’s just been quite a long a long afternoon. Honestly I’d like to tell you more things, it’s just been a pretty s*** day.”
F1 rookies need to be more careful
Both turn 1 incidents were caused by relative inexperienced F1 drivers, as Liam Lawson ran into Oscar Piastri, and Gabriel Bortoleto did an imitation of Valtteri Bottas in Hungary 2021. Asked whether he thinks his colleagues should be a bit more cautious, Gasly kind of agreed.
“I think if you look at it… I don’t know exactly what happened with Lawson, but obviously Bortoletto made a pretty big misjudgement there. And Liam also hit Piastri, so two guys with not much experience.
“And I mean, we know it’s a tricky one from the past few years, turn one is very tricky. But then you obviously need to consider that and I think clearly yesterday was a good display of driving skills. Turn one not really today.”
But despite the poor result, Gasly’s qualifying pace for the Las Vegas GP does give some hope for the final two races of 2025.
“Yeah, I’m in another Q3 and it’s my ninth Q3 of the year,” he rejoiced. “I’m very happy with my quali performance.
“We’ve had a bit of a dip mid-season and found out some of the reasons why it wasn’t going too well, and I must say I’m pretty pleased.
“We’re still trying every weekend and it was pretty tough yesterday, but I think overall we did a good job. It’s just a shame for all the guys not to really benefit from it.”
