The 2025 F2 Drivers’ Championship heads into its decisive final two rounds, with five drivers still firmly in contention for the title. Only a handful of points separate the leading contenders, setting the stage for a fiercely competitive conclusion to the season.
Among them is Richard Verschoor, currently fourth in the standings with 151 points. The Dutchman sits just 37 points behind championship leader Leonardo Fornaroli and remains within striking distance as the battle intensifies. Verschoor will be aiming to strengthen his title bid at the Lusail International Circuit during the 2025 F2 Qatar GP weekend, where maximising every opportunity could prove vital in the fight for the crown.
Excited to jump back into the car.
The last time the F2 grid was in action was nearly two months ago at the 2025 F2 Azerbaijan GP. After the extended break, Richard Verschoor is eager to return to the cockpit and resume the title fight at the 2025 F2 Qatar GP.
Reflecting on the long pause, Verschoor likened the process of getting back up to speed to learning how to ride a bike. In his view, only a few laps are needed to rediscover the rhythm and feel of the car before pushing fully into race mode.
“I am very excited, I haven’t touched a race car for two months. But I think it’s a bit like cycling, the first lap you have to see if everything is still the same and from then on, I think we will be good.”
The final two races of the season
Verschoor is also enthusiastic about returning to Qatar, where he aims to improve on his results from last season. During the 2024 F2 Qatar GP weekend, he secured a podium with P3 in the Sprint Race but fell outside the points in the Feature Race, finishing P17. This year, he believes both he and the team have the potential to be far more competitive, drawing on the data and experience gained from last season to strengthen their performance.
His confidence carries through to the 2025 season finale in Abu Dhabi as well. Both Losail and Yas Marina are high-speed circuits—layouts that traditionally suit his driving style—giving Verschoor added optimism for the crucial final stretch of the championship.
“It’s very nice that last year MP and I got to experience our two rounds together, it gave us some good data for this year. I know that we are competitive on this track, and I like these kind of tracks, this one and Abu Dhabi.”
Strategy for this weekend
Verschoor aims to extract the maximum performance from both himself and the car as he prepares for the 2025 F2 Qatar GP, with the goal of strengthening his position in the championship fight.
“I think we just need to focus on ourselves, see if we can extract the most performance from the car and myself, but I am very confident we can do a good job here and hopefully put some pressure on.”
Confidence will be a crucial factor at the Lusail International Circuit, a track defined by long straights, high-speed corners, and significant tyre demands. Verschoor emphasises that being able to trust the car is essential when pushing to the limit on such a fast layout.
With nearly two months having passed since he last drove, the single Free Practice session takes on added importance as he works to rebuild rhythm and precision.
“You need confidence around here. It’s a very high-speed track. There are many corners, especially in sector three where you need the confidence in the car and yourself, that’s where it starts. On the other hand, I have not driven for two months, so to be on the limit in six or seven laps on FP will be very important to be ready for quali.”
Title fight mentality
To strengthen his bid for the 2025 F2 Drivers’ Championship, Verschoor intends to take the final rounds one step at a time. His focus is firmly on the Qatar weekend, where delivering a clean, competitive performance and maximising every points-scoring opportunity will be the priority.
“For me it doesn’t change much to think about the title picture, it doesn’t really matter. I just have to perform here in Qatar and the only thing I can do to still be in the fight is to win this weekend. It will be our only aim, to score good points in the Sprint and the Feature Race.”
“I just have to look at it, session by session, and it all starts with confidence in myself and the team, which at the moment is very high. I am just very excited mostly to be back in the car and I will just try to enjoy my last two weekends in F2.”
