Patricio Gonzalez will remain with VRD Racing for the 2026 GB3 Championship, aiming to build on the momentum from a promising 2025 season. The 17-year-old Mexican driver, who joined the Anglo-American team midway through 2025, has shown great potential in his rookie year in Europe.
A strong finish to 2025
Gonzalez made an impressive start to his GB3 career. Despite limited experience on European circuits, he quickly adapted and produced solid results. His best qualifying performance was seventh at Donington Park, and he achieved a best race result of sixth at the same venue.
Moreover, Gonzalez demonstrated his racing craft with a further top-10 finish at Donington Park, improving by five places from his starting position. He also managed to secure a ninth-place finish at the season finale in Monza. These results were important milestones for the young driver, underlining his potential for growth in the competitive GB3 field.
From the Americas to Europe
Before his European debut in 2025, Gonzalez had exclusively raced in the Americas. He started karting in 2022, a relatively late entry into motorsport. Like his brother, Rodrigo, who also raced in GB3, Patricio quickly rose through the ranks.
In 2024, Gonzalez transitioned to single-seaters, racing in the USF Juniors category. He ended the season with a best result of sixth at Portland and accumulated five top-10 finishes. Gonzalez also gained valuable experience in the YACademy Winter Series, securing four top-six finishes.
At the start of 2025, Gonzalez raced again in the YACademy Winter Series, finishing eighth overall. He also contested five races in the USF2000 series, competing at iconic tracks like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Road America.
Valuable experience ahead of 2026
With 12 GB3 races to his name, Gonzalez has gained significant mileage over the past year. However, he has been actively preparing for the 2026 season by visiting key UK circuits and three European venues on next year’s calendar. This preparation will be crucial as he aims to improve his consistency and performance across the full season.
Gonzalez himself expressed his excitement about the opportunity to continue racing in GB3 with VRD Racing. “I’m extremely excited to continue with VRD Racing for a full season in the GB3 Championship in 2026. Last year gave me my first real experience of racing in Europe, and I learned a huge amount both on and off the track. Now I feel much more prepared and motivated to take the next step and keep developing as a driver,” said Gonzalez.
Building on strong team relationships
A key factor in Gonzalez’s decision to stay with VRD Racing is the strong working relationship he has built with the team. He appreciates the support and trust they have shown him, which he believes will be essential for his continued development.
“Staying with the same team is very important for me, as we already have a strong working relationship and a clear direction. I’m grateful to everyone at VRD for their trust and support, and I’m ready to work hard, push myself every weekend, and keep improving throughout the season,” Gonzalez added.
VRD Racing’s Team Principal, Dan Mitchell, echoed Gonzalez’s optimism about the 2026 season. He praised the young Mexican’s performances in GB3, especially given his relatively short time in motorsport.
“We were really impressed with Patricio’s performances in GB3 this year. Considering the little amount of racing he’s done so far in his career, he acquitted himself well to the step up, and established himself in the midfield towards the end of the year. With a proper build-up to next year, we’re really confident he will continue to make strides forward, and we’re excited to see how he performs next year,” Mitchell stated.
Patricio Gonzalez’s growth as a driver in 2025 has positioned him well for a strong 2026 season. With his natural talent and the support of VRD Racing, Gonzalez is ready to take the next step in his career. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely as he continues his journey in the highly competitive GB3 Championship.
