The first practice session for round two of the Formula E Championship ended with Jake Dennis topping the timing sheets. The fastest lap of the session was a solid 1:06.053. Dennis was followed by Pascal Wehrlein in second, with Oliver Rowland rounding out the top three.
First flying laps
The last practice session of the weekend got underway as the drivers headed onto the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit. Nico Müller led the pack onto the track as the 40-minute session began.
The first lap of the session was set by reigning champion Oliver Rowland with a 1:13.01, followed quickly by Mitch Evans and Nyck De Vries. The field quickly set the first flying laps. As the times dropped, Maximilian Günther set the new benchmark of 1:08.12. De Vries was quick to catch up, going 0.07 faster.
The first issue of the session occurred when Jaguar’s António Félix da Costa was seen climbing out of the car due to a brake-by-wire issue. FP2 remained the last session in which teams could make significant changes before Qualifying.
Dan Ticktum spun at Turn 1 after a lock-up but quickly found the escape road. Meanwhile, Rowland set the quickest time of the weekend thus far with a strong 1:05.788. He is followed by Jean-Eric Vergne, 1.322 behind, and Dennis, 1.410 behind.
Halfway point
At the halfway point of the practice session, Sébastien Buemi looked quick in the Envision as he knocked Rowland off the top spot with a 1:05.301.
Dennis was noted for a burnout in the pits as the Andretti driver found himself in a pickle. That could be a potential penalty, as da Costa received one for wheel spin in the pit lane during free practice in Sáo Paulo back in December.
With 17 minutes left on the clock, Buemi, Rowland, and Di Grassi found themselves at the top of the timing sheet. Meanwhile, Zane Maloney lost the rear and went off into the runoff area.
Last improvements before session end
Over time, more drivers found themselves improving. Andretti looked to be strong as both Dennis and Felipe Drugovich took second and third. The momentum was short-lived as Drugovich’s time was deleted.
Notably, rookie Pepe Marti struggled as he had no set time. The CUPRA KIRO driver looked to have a hardware issue. Joining him on the lower end of the timings were Jaguar’s da Costa, Drugovich and Envision’s Joel Eriksson.
With a few minutes to go, the field went for it on their last flying laps. Buemi held the top spot and looked unbeatable on top with the strong 1:05.301. However, at the last second, Wehrlein stormed to the top, going quicker with a 1:05.141. As Buemi was knocked down to second, the top three was rounded out by Penske’s Taylor Barnard in third with a 1:05.35.
