In a bid to lead the Formula E Championship fight, Nick Cassidy brings home the win for Citroën at the Mexico City E-Prix!

The stage was set for the second Formula E race of Season 12 at the Mexico City E-Prix, after an intense Qualifying session. Envision’s Sébastien Buemi seized his 17th Formula E pole position in dramatic fashion at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The Swiss driver defeated DS Penske’s Taylor Barnard in a controversial final where the young Briton crossed the line fastest but lost his lap after exceeding track limits on the final straight.

Barnard, who battled severe oversteer throughout Qualifying while showing impressive pace, will start second ahead of Mahindra’s Edoardo Mortara in third and Jaguar’s Mitch Evans in fourth. Pre-qualifying favourite Pascal Wehrlein, who holds the record for most poles at this circuit with four, surprisingly fell in Group B after overheating issues hampered his performance.

São Paulo E-Prix winner Jake Dennis advanced through Group A but lost to Mortara in the quarter-finals, while Buemi knocked out reigning champion Oliver Rowland in their quarter-final duel. Buemi now looks to convert his pole position into victory and continue Envision’s strong start to the season in what promises to be an exciting race in Mexico City.

Lights out in Mexico

The lights go out, and it was an unfortunate start for Buemi who went too deep into Turn 1, allowing Barnard to take the lead. Mortara slid comfortably in second followed by Nico Müller, whose teammate, Wehrlein, was the first driver to take Attack Mode. A bold strategy from Porsche.

Mortara briefly took the lead ahead of the Porsche duo, pushing youngster Barnard out of the top three. With the extra power, Wehrlein overtook Mortara for the lead, while his teammate defended from former World Champion Jake Dennis.

The Porsche duo were looking more comfortable with Müller in the lead. Will they work together to seal the deal at the Formula E Mexico City E-Prix Race?

Below the top

The rest of the pack, most notably, Dan Ticktum, António Félix da Costa and Zane Maloney have taken Attack Mode, in an attempt to gain an advantage. Mortara slides back up on top on, while Ticktum manages to trail behind in third, proving the power of Porsche in Mexico. Da Costa surged up to fourth, but his former teammate Wehrlein beat him. Barnard refused to give up, charging from fifth all the way to third by lap 16.

Yellow flag!

Nyck de Vries found himself in trouble, when he came to a stop at Turn 1. Officials waved the yellow flags and just as lap 18 started, called a Full Course Yellow. More dramatic moments occurred as Da Costa pushed Rowland onto the grass. The Nissan driver dropped to twelfth. Additionally, stewards investigated Joel Eriksson and Norman Nato for gaining an advantage off track.

Marshals found De Vries’ car difficult to retrieve, so race control deployed the Safety Car. Stewards also handed Eriksson a 5-second penalty for gaining an advantage off track. Following the penalty, things kept on getting worse for Envision, as Buemi came into the pits with tyre pressure problems.

While Müller, Mortara and Wehrlein looked comfortable in the top three, Buemi will surely be disappointed with how his race began.

Safety Car in

With 13 laps left, Müller was still going strong leading ahead of Mortara and Barnard.

Trouble did not stay away for long as Da Costa, Maximilian Günther and Jean-Éric Vergne make contact with each other. The Jaguar spun around and was sent to the back of the grid. Unfortunately, it was a typical case of three cars heading into one corner, ending in a collision.

Although Günther appeared at fault, Da Costa reported that Nick Cassidy had hit him, ending his race early. Meanwhile, Ticktum was now under investigation for gaining an advantage off track, while Da Costa and Günther for causing a collision.

A new race leader

Cassidy did not relent, taking the race lead in the Mexico City E-Prix. Dennis still had extra power, but would it be enough to fight?

Cassidy maintains the lead as Mortara and Dennis make contact, Mortara defending from the Andretti. Dennis loses a part of his front wing in the process, while Cassidy remains first.

The final stages of the Formula E Mexico City E-Prix Race

As the race reached its closing stages, two laps were added to make up for the earlier disruptions. Cassidy still led ahead from Mortara and Dennis, but Rowland came in quick, taking P3 from the fellow Brit. Felipe Drugovich, who was in P15 ahead of the final lap, was shown the black and white flag for track limits violations, while the incident between Mortara and Dennis was noted by race control.

Despite the incidents, all eyes were on the top three, with Cassidy taking victory at Formula E’s 150th race. He was followed by Mortara, who put up a great fight, while Rowland kept up despite coming off track.

Cupra Kiro’s newest rookie, Pepe Martí also took his first Formula E points, finishing in P7, despite starting last, and serving penalties.
