Van Amersfoort Racing (VAR) have confirmed that Rafael Villagómez will remain with the team for the 2026 F2 season. It means every seat in the field has been confirmed for the year ahead.
Rafael Villagómez and VAR continue a long relationship heading into the 2026 F2 season
Since 2021 in the Euroformula Open, the 24-year-old from Mexico has driven for the Dutch team. In his two seasons with them in Formula 3, he scored four points.
However, since his jump to Formula 2 in 2024, Villagómez has had more joy. After bagging 13 points that year, he made a bigger step forward in 2025.
In Barcelona, he secured his maiden podium in F2. A late race Safety Car changed the complexion of the Sprint race. Along with Richard Verschoor and Alex Dunne, Villagómez stormed through the pack on much fresher soft tyres and took P3. He went on to bag a second rostrum appearance in the Lusail Sprint.
Crucially, he also bagged very good points in Feature races. P4 in Monza, P6 in Abu Dhabi and P7 in Baku showed genuine progress on pace.
He finished 14th in the 2025 standings on 43 points.
Rafael Villagómez comments on staying with VAR for 2026 F2 season
“I’m extremely excited and grateful to be staying another year in F2 with VAR.
“Together with the team, we finished the season strongly which gives me great confidence heading into the new year. I can’t wait to get back on track, and work with the team to achieve even stronger results in the upcoming season.”
Van Amersfoort Racing Team Principal, Brad Joyce:
“We’re very happy to continue with Rafael for 2026.
“Over the past seasons, he’s shown strong commitment and a clear step forward in performance. The podiums in Barcelona and Qatar were defining moments, but more importantly, they reflect the progress we’ve made together.
“We’re looking forward to building on that momentum and fighting for the top steps of the podium together.”
