George Russell beat Lewis Hamilton to pole by less than a tenth in a fascinating Q3. Kimi Antonelli was over 0.3s off pole but started 3rd. Norris, Verstappen, Hadjar and Piastri followed, with less a tenth covering 3rd to 7th.
Liam Lawson, Nico Hülkenberg and Charles Leclerc completed the top 10 on the grid following the Ferrari driver’s crash in Q3.
No matter what happened, Kimi Antonelli would leave the Circuit de Catalunya in the points lead. If Lewis Hamilton won, the gap would be 41, 43 in the case of George Russell.
In the Constructors’ Championship, Racing Bulls looked to take points out of Alpine following the controversy of Monaco.
