Kimi Antonelli started on pole position for a second straight race as he looked to add to his maiden win in Shanghai. Teammate George Russell was alongside him. After that it, it was McLaren (Piastri), Ferrari (Leclerc), McLaren (Norris) and Ferrari (Hamilton).
Pierre Gasly was the lead midfield runner on the grid as Red Bull confirmed that they are in this group at present. Isack Hadjar was P8, with Max Verstappen starting down in 11th. Bortoleto and Lindblad split the Red Bulls.
Sitting P5 in the Drivers’ Championship, Ollie Bearman faced a long day starting in P18.
On lap 21, Ollie Bearman had a scary crash. As Colapinto was clipping, the closing speed was enormous. The Brit had to take to the grass, flying across the run-off and into the tyre barrier at Spoon. He limped away from it.
It was another DNF for Lance Stroll in 2026. A suspected water pressure issue ended his Japanese GP.
Kimi Antonelli took advantage of the Safety Car. He drove away to dominate and take the win, as well as the championship lead. Oscar Piastri finished a very solid P2, with Charles Leclerc rounding out the podium.
