Alex Aka and Dylan Pereira emerged victorious from a dramatic rain-hit 2026 GT World Challenge (GTWC) Europe Sprint Cup Race 1 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, taking the #99 Tresor Attempto Racing Audi from 14th on the grid to the top step of the podium.

The Gold Cup pairing capitalised on a red flag and a rapidly changing race to defeat championship leaders Bastian Buus and Ricardo Feller by 0.789s. Patric Niederhauser and Luca Engstler completed the overall podium for Rutronik Racing, while Joseph Loake and Dean Macdonald secured fourth for Garage 59.

Further back, Peter Dempsey and Eddie Cheever took their third consecutive Bronze Cup victory from fifth overall, while Mikey Porter and Guilherme Oliveira returned Optimum Motorsport to the top of the Silver Cup. Tommaso Mosca and Matías Zagazeta endured a difficult race, but nevertheless secured the Gold Cup championship for AF Corse.

Jewiss denies Buus as rain complicates opening laps

Buus started Race 1 from pole after strengthening Lionspeed GP’s championship advantage during Barcelona Qualifying 1. However, the increasingly heavy rain ensured that starting position alone would not guarantee control of the opening phase.

Kiern Jewiss immediately demonstrated that point. The Bronze Cup polesitter launched the #222 2Seas Motorsport Mercedes-AMG past Buus and took the lead, while the championship leader struggled to find the same confidence in the difficult conditions. Buus consequently began to fall backwards as several drivers behind him attacked.

Dennis Marschall made the most significant early progress. After starting seventh in the #74 Kessel Racing Ferrari, the German rapidly moved into second and closed on Jewiss. His first attempt to take the lead resulted in contact that removed part of the Mercedes-AMG’s rear bumper, although Jewiss initially retained the position.

Marschall remained close and attacked again, this time completing the move to take the overall lead. As a result, a Bronze Cup Ferrari headed the field while several of the established Pro Cup contenders struggled to make similar progress in the worsening weather.

Auer charges through the field

Lucas Auer produced another of the standout drives during the opening half of the race. Starting only 20th in the #48 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG, the Austrian carved through the field and moved into contention for the leading positions.

His progress came at an important moment for both Auer and Maro Engel, who entered Barcelona among the crews that still retained a mathematical chance of winning the Sprint Cup championship. While Buus lost ground from pole, Auer’s charge briefly brought Winward Racing back into the centre of the title picture.

By the halfway stage, the #48 Mercedes-AMG had emerged as a genuine contender for victory. However, the increasingly severe weather soon made outright pace secondary to safety and strategy, with standing water continuing to build around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Race Control eventually intervened shortly after the 30-minute mark and stopped the race. The timing of the red flag proved decisive because some crews had already completed their mandatory pit stops, while others had yet to enter the pit lane.

Red flag transforms race order

The interruption created a complicated strategic situation. The Pro and Gold Cup crews had largely completed their mandatory stops, while the Bronze and Silver Cup runners benefited from the opportunity to make their driver changes during the red-flag period.

Consequently, Constantin Dressler inherited the lead after taking over the #74 Kessel Racing Ferrari from Marschall. Charles Dawson sat second in the #222 2Seas Motorsport Mercedes-AMG, while Darren Leung held third for Paradine Competition.

The cars that had looked strongest before the stoppage therefore found themselves behind several Bronze Cup runners when racing resumed. Aka lined up seventh in the #99 Audi after taking over from Pereira, while Feller restarted eighth aboard the championship-leading #80 Lionspeed GP Porsche.

The unusual order created a completely different race for the final phase. Rather than defending positions at the front, the leading Pro and Gold Cup drivers needed to work their way through several highly competitive Bronze entries before they could fight for the overall victory.

Boccolacci takes lead before penalty strikes

Dorian Boccolacci initially made the fastest progress through the traffic after taking over the #2 Boutsen VDS Porsche. The Frenchman picked his way through the Bronze Cup runners and eventually reached the head of the field, putting himself in a strong position to challenge for victory.

Dressler made the task considerably more difficult than the class difference suggested. The Kessel Racing driver defended strongly against the faster Pro Cup entries and remained firmly involved in the overall battle despite the pressure developing behind.

However, Boccolacci’s time at the front proved brief. Officials handed the #2 Porsche a drive-through penalty for an unsafe release during its mandatory pit stop, removing Boutsen VDS from the fight for victory and ultimately leaving Boccolacci and Sven Müller sixth in the official Barcelona Race 1 classification.

The penalty opened the door for Aka, who had followed Boccolacci through the traffic. The Tresor Attempto Racing driver moved into the lead and immediately faced pressure from another driver making rapid progress through the recovering Bronze Cup runners.

Feller hunts Aka for victory

Feller worked his way forward aboard the #80 Porsche and eventually emerged in second, bringing the Sprint Cup championship leaders back into contention after Buus’ difficult opening stint.

Although Feller appeared to hold a slight pace advantage during the closing stages, Aka refused to surrender the lead. The German kept the Audi ahead despite the pressure and managed the final laps to secure a breakthrough overall victory for Tresor Attempto Racing.

Aka crossed the line just 0.789s ahead of Feller after 23 laps, completing an extraordinary recovery from 14th on the grid. The result also gave both Aka and Pereira their first overall Sprint Cup victory and produced another outright win for a Gold Cup crew after Garage 59 achieved the feat at Zandvoort.

Feller and Buus nevertheless secured an extremely valuable second place. After entering the weekend 5.5 points clear and adding another point through Buus’ pole position, their latest podium put the Lionspeed GP pairing on the verge of securing the Sprint Cup drivers’ championship.

Their closest pre-race challengers suffered considerably more difficult afternoons. Arthur Leclerc and Thomas Neubauer retired the #50 AF Corse Ferrari after only five laps, while Daniel Juncadella and Chris Lulham finished 12th for Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing. Defending champions Charles Weerts and Kelvin van der Linde recovered from 28th on the grid to complete the top 10 for Team WRT.

Rutronik completes podium as Dempsey stars in fifth

Behind the leading pair, Engstler and Niederhauser secured Rutronik Racing’s second podium of the season with third in the #96 Lamborghini Temerario GT3. They crossed the line 4.309s behind the winners after navigating the chaotic conditions and changing order.

Loake and Macdonald produced another strong recovery for Garage 59 to secure fourth in the #59 McLaren. However, Dempsey arguably delivered the standout performance behind the podium aboard the #93 Ziggo Sport Tempesta Racing Porsche.

After taking over from Cheever, Dempsey fought directly with several Pro Cup drivers during the final phase and refused to give up track position despite the pressure. He ultimately brought the Porsche home fifth overall and secured a third successive Bronze Cup victory for the pairing.

Dressler and Marschall finished second in the Bronze Cup and ninth overall after playing a major role at the front throughout the race. Dienst and Rinat Salikhov completed the class podium for Winward Racing from 17th overall.

The victory moved Dempsey and Cheever another significant step towards the Bronze Cup crown. After their success during the opening Zandvoort race, the Tempesta pairing entered the Barcelona finale with momentum and strengthened their position further in the wet.

AF Corse secures Gold Cup title despite penalty

Aka and Pereira took both the overall and Gold Cup victories, while Jop Rappange and David Pittard produced KPX Motorsport’s strongest result of the season to finish eighth overall and second in class. Simon Gachet and Romain Andriolo completed the Gold Cup podium for CSA Racing.

However, the most important class result concerned Mosca and Zagazeta. The #51 AF Corse Ferrari originally finished further up the order but received a post-race penalty following contact, dropping the car to 30th overall and seventh in the Gold Cup.

Despite the setback, their points advantage proved sufficient to secure the 2026 Gold Cup championship with one race remaining. Mosca and Zagazeta had built their title challenge through a consistent campaign and entered Barcelona with a commanding advantage over Thomas Fleming and Louis Prette.

The Garage 59 pairing could only finish 24th overall in the #58 McLaren, removing any remaining possibility of denying AF Corse the championship.

Optimum returns to Silver Cup victory

Porter and Oliveira completed the Silver Cup victory for Optimum Motorsport after navigating the difficult conditions in the #5 McLaren 720S GT3 EVO. They finished 21st overall and returned to the top step of the class podium for the first time since the Sprint Cup season opener at Brands Hatch.

Jef Machiels and Gilles Stadsbader followed in second for AF Corse, while Nicolas Baert and Gustav Bergström completed the Silver Cup podium for Lionspeed GP. Felix Hirsiger and Carl Bennett, who had started from Silver Cup pole and fourth overall, eventually finished sixth within the class.

Already-crowned Silver Cup champions Ignacio Montenegro and Matisse Lismont ended a difficult race 33rd overall for Team WRT. With their title secured before Barcelona, however, the result carried no championship consequences for the pairing.

At the head of the field, Aka and Pereira ultimately emerged from the rain and strategic uncertainty with an unlikely victory after beginning the afternoon from the seventh row. Their charge gave Tresor Attempto Racing a memorable win, while Feller and Buus took another major step towards completing Lionspeed GP’s Sprint Cup title bid.
