Heading into Qualifying, McLaughlin set the fastest time during Practice 1 and Kirkwood went fastest during Practice 2. Unfortunately, McLaughlin clipped a kerb and crashed during Round 2. Kirkwood got knocked out during the Fast 12.

The Fast 6 Qualifying session debuted a new format, with drivers taking to the streets for a single-lap shootout. Marcus Ericsson scored his first pole position in IndyCar.
