Robert Kubica topped the second Free Practice session (FP20 for the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 6 Hours of Monza, setting the fastest Hypercar lap for AF Corse as improving track conditions allowed drivers to significantly reduce their lap times. Meanwhile, Proton Competition secured an impressive one-two in LMGT3, with Sebastian Priaulx finishing narrowly ahead of teammate Logan Sargeant.
Kubica recorded a 1:38.143 in the #83 Ferrari 499P during the closing stages, finishing 0.796 seconds ahead of Harry Tincknell’s #007 Aston Martin Valkyrie. Raffaele Marciello completed the top three for BMW M Team WRT, while Victor Martins followed fourth for Alpine Endurance Team.
In LMGT3, Priaulx produced a 1:50.352 in the #77 Ford Mustang, finishing just 0.087 seconds ahead of Sargeant in the sister #88 entry. Iron Lynx secured third through Maxime Martin, who placed the #61 Mercedes-AMG ahead of Manthey DK Engineering’s Porsche.
Wet conditions again affected the 90-minute session, although the circuit gradually dried throughout the afternoon. Several teams switched to slick tyres during the final stages, producing significant improvements across both categories.
Unlike FP1, which featured three red flags, FP2 ran without a red-flag interruption. Officials deployed one Full Course Yellow during the session.
Kubica puts AF Corse Ferrari ahead in Hypercar
Kubica emerged fastest during the final minutes of FP2, delivering an encouraging performance for AF Corse ahead of Sunday’s championship finale. The Polish driver recorded a 1:38.143 in the #83 Ferrari 499P, completing his fastest lap on the 45th of the car’s 46 tours.
The result represented a substantial improvement compared with the morning session, when teammate Yifei Ye finished second with a 1:46.263. Kubica’s afternoon benchmark was more than eight seconds quicker, reflecting the dramatic changes in track conditions.
The #83 Ferrari, which Kubica shares with Ye and Phil Hanson, had also led much of FP1 before Charles Milesi secured the fastest time for Alpine during the closing stages.
However, the afternoon session produced a different outcome. Martins initially established the leading wet-weather benchmark in the #36 Alpine A424, but Kubica moved ahead when the circuit began drying.
He first recorded a 1:39.454 before improving further on his following lap, securing an advantage that his rivals could not overcome.
The morning’s rain-affected FP1 session had demonstrated Ferrari’s competitiveness despite Alpine’s late improvement. Kubica’s FP2 performance subsequently placed the Italian manufacturer’s customer-entered Hypercar at the top of the classification.
Aston Martin continues strong form as BMW moves into top three
Aston Martin THOR Team continued its encouraging start to the Monza weekend, with Tincknell securing second in the #007 Valkyrie. The British driver recorded a 1:38.939 during the closing stages, finishing 0.796 seconds behind Kubica.
Tincknell shares the V12-powered Hypercar with Tom Gamble, with the pair targeting Aston Martin’s first FIA WEC victory. Their latest performance followed fourth place in FP1, demonstrating the car’s competitiveness across both wet and improving conditions.
BMW M Team WRT also made significant progress, with Marciello placing the #15 M Hybrid V8 third. The Swiss driver recorded a 1:39.759, finishing 1.616 seconds behind Kubica and 0.820 seconds away from Tincknell.
The #15 BMW, which Marciello shares with Kevin Magnussen and Dries Vanthoor, improved considerably after a difficult opening session. The crew had finished 15th in FP1, leaving it well outside the leading group before Friday afternoon’s recovery.
BMW enters Monza occupying second in the Hypercar Manufacturers’ Championship, although Ferrari and Cadillac remain mathematically capable of challenging the German manufacturer.
The championship standings following Barcelona place BMW 24 points ahead of Ferrari, making another strong result important as the manufacturer attempts to secure runner-up honours.
Martins keeps Alpine competitive as Genesis and Cadillac complete top six
Alpine Endurance Team remained competitive during FP2, with Martins recording a 1:40.058 in the #36 A424. The French driver had briefly led the session in wet conditions before the switch to slick tyres allowed Kubica and several competitors to improve.
Martins eventually finished fourth, 1.915 seconds behind Ferrari’s benchmark. His performance followed third place in FP1, ensuring Alpine remained among the leading manufacturers throughout Friday’s running.
The result also provided encouragement ahead of the team’s final Hypercar race, with the French manufacturer preparing to conclude its current WEC programme following the Monza finale.
Genesis Magma Racing followed fifth, with Mathieu Jaminet recording a 1:40.239 in the #19 GMR-001. The Frenchman finished just 0.181 seconds behind Martins, maintaining the manufacturer’s competitive form during its debut season.
Jaminet shares the #19 entry with Paul-Loup Chatin and Daniel Juncadella, with the trio attempting to conclude their campaign strongly after several challenging weekends.
Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA completed the top six through Earl Bamber, who recorded a 1:40.265 in the #38 V-Series.R. The New Zealander finished just 0.026 seconds behind Jaminet, demonstrating the close margins among the chasing Hypercars.
Ferrari, Peugeot and Genesis complete Hypercar top ten
Ferrari AF Corse secured seventh with the #50 499P, which recorded a 1:40.295 during the closing stages. The entry of Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen finished just 0.030 seconds behind Bamber’s Cadillac, placing two Ferraris among the top seven.
The #50 crew had encountered difficulties during FP1 when Fuoco went off track, triggering the first red flag. However, the car subsequently returned to running and continued its preparations during the afternoon.
Peugeot TotalEnergies followed in eighth, with the #94 9X8 recording a 1:40.909. The car of Loïc Duval, Malthe Jakobsen and Théo Pourchaire completed 46 laps, gathering valuable data ahead of the French manufacturer’s final race with its current driver combination.
Pourchaire recently confirmed his departure from Peugeot’s WEC programme as he prepares to prioritise Opel’s Formula E programme in 2027.
Genesis placed its second Hypercar ninth, with the #17 GMR-001 setting a 1:41.046. The entry finished just 0.137 seconds behind Peugeot, while the #35 Alpine completed the top ten with a 1:41.063.
Milesi’s #35 Alpine had topped FP1, but the car finished tenth in the afternoon, 2.920 seconds behind Kubica’s fastest lap.
Toyota remains down the order ahead of championship decider
Toyota Racing endured another difficult session on Friday afternoon despite entering the Monza finale as the Hypercar Manufacturers’ Champion. The Japanese manufacturer again struggled to match the leading competitors, with both TR010 Hybrids finishing outside the top ten.
The championship-leading #8 entry of Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryō Hirakawa finished 12th with a 1:41.458. The crew completed 45 laps, ending the session 3.315 seconds behind Kubica.
The sister #7 Toyota experienced an even more challenging afternoon, finishing 17th and last in Hypercar. The car of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries recorded a 1:43.377, leaving it 5.234 seconds away from the leading Ferrari.
The results follow a similarly difficult FP1, when the #8 and #7 Toyotas finished 11th and 14th respectively.
Nevertheless, the Hypercar Drivers’ Championship battle remains exclusively between the two crews. Buemi, Hartley and Hirakawa enter Sunday’s race with 114 points, holding a 17-point advantage over Conway, Kobayashi and de Vries.
With 26 points available, including the bonus point for pole position, both combinations remain mathematically capable of securing the title.
Drying conditions produce dramatic late improvements
Friday afternoon’s session began with conditions similar to those encountered during FP1, as rain continued to affect the historic Monza circuit.
The wet track and cool temperatures forced teams to carefully manage tyre warm-up and grip, particularly through the circuit’s heavy braking zones. However, the rain gradually eased, allowing the surface to dry throughout the 90-minute session.
Team WRT’s #32 BMW M4 LMGT3 Evo was among the first entries to switch to slick tyres, encouraging several other competitors to adopt the same strategy.
The change transformed the classification during the final ten minutes, with drivers across both categories rapidly improving their lap times. Kubica’s fastest effort was 7.719 seconds quicker than Milesi’s FP1 benchmark, highlighting the difference between the two sessions.
Unlike the morning’s heavily interrupted running, FP2 featured no red flags. Officials deployed a single Full Course Yellow shortly before the halfway point, but the field otherwise enjoyed an uninterrupted opportunity to complete its programmes.
The #12 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA completed the most laps among the Hypercars with 47, while the #83 Ferrari and several other entries also accumulated significant mileage.
Priaulx leads Proton Competition one-two in LMGT3
Proton Competition emerged as the leading team in LMGT3, securing the two fastest laps with its Ford Mustang entries. Priaulx topped the classification in the #77 Mustang, recording a 1:50.352 during the final minutes.
The British driver shares the car with Eric Powell and Ben Tuck, with the trio attempting to conclude the season strongly after several difficult races.
Sargeant provided Proton with an equally encouraging result in the sister #88 Mustang. The former Formula 1 driver recorded a 1:50.439, finishing just 0.087 seconds behind Priaulx.
The two drivers traded the fastest time as the circuit dried, with both benefiting from their teams’ decision to switch to slick tyres during the closing stages. The Mustangs also completed 41 laps apiece, more than any other LMGT3 entry.
Their performance represented a significant improvement compared with FP1, when the #88 Mustang finished second but the #77 managed only ninth.
The pair’s competitiveness at Monza provides Proton with an encouraging opportunity to pursue a strong final result, particularly after a challenging campaign against the established LMGT3 manufacturers.
Iron Lynx Mercedes and Manthey Porsche follow leading Fords
Iron Lynx completed the LMGT3 top three, with Martin recording a 1:50.653 in the #61 Mercedes-AMG. The Belgian driver finished 0.301 seconds behind Priaulx, establishing the German manufacturer’s best time during FP2.
Martin shares the #61 entry with Martin Berry and Rui Andrade, with the trio continuing its preparations for the final race of the season.
Manthey DK Engineering followed fourth, with Ayhancan Güven setting a 1:51.344 in the #91 Porsche 911 GT3 R LMGT3. The Turkish driver finished 0.992 seconds behind Proton’s leading Mustang, giving Manthey an encouraging result after its difficult morning session.
The #91 crew had encountered problems during FP1 when James Cottingham went off at the second Lesmo corner, triggering the third red flag.
Akkodis ASP Team completed the top six, with José María López placing the #87 Lexus RC F LMGT3 fifth on a 1:51.367. The Argentine finished just 0.023 seconds behind Güven.
The sister #78 Lexus followed sixth through Esteban Masson, recording a 1:51.435. Only 0.068 seconds separated the two Lexus entries, demonstrating the close competition among the leading LMGT3 manufacturers.
Team WRT improves as Manthey championship challenger recovers
Team WRT’s #32 BMW M4 LMGT3 Evo finished seventh in class, recording a 1:51.481. The car of Darren Leung, Sean Gelael and Augusto Farfus completed 39 laps, ending the session 1.129 seconds behind Priaulx.
The entry carries a special Alex Zanardi tribute livery at Monza, honouring the late Italian racing driver and Paralympic champion.
Heart of Racing Team followed eighth with its #27 Aston Martin Vantage AMR LMGT3, recording a 1:51.743.
Meanwhile, The Bend Manthey made considerable progress after completing just three laps in FP1. The #92 Porsche finished ninth in the afternoon with a 1:51.926, allowing the crew to gather more representative data ahead of the championship finale.
Yasser Shahin, Riccardo Pera and Richard Lietz enter Monza second in the LMGT3 Teams’ Championship, 18 points behind TF Sport’s leading #33 Corvette.
The crew’s recovery from its difficult opening session therefore provides encouragement, although it will need another strong performance to maintain its championship challenge.
Garage 59 completed the top ten through the #10 McLaren, which had led FP1 with Fleming at the wheel. The car recorded a 1:51.990 in the afternoon, finishing 1.638 seconds behind Proton’s leading Mustang.
TF Sport faces difficult afternoon as LMGT3 championship battle continues
TF Sport endured a challenging second practice session, with its championship-leading #33 Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R finishing only 17th in class.
The car of Ben Keating, Edgar and Nicky Catsburg recorded a 1:55.485, leaving it 5.133 seconds behind Priaulx. The result represented a substantial change from FP1, when Edgar placed the Corvette third.
The sister #34 Racing Team Turkey by TF Corvette also struggled, finishing 16th with a 1:54.809.
Despite the disappointing practice results, TF Sport retains a significant advantage heading into Sunday’s championship decider. The #33 Corvette leads the LMGT3 Teams’ Championship with 92 points, ahead of The Bend Manthey on 74.
Racing Team Turkey follows on 70, while Team WRT’s #69 BMW remains mathematically involved with 66.
The LMGT3 championship standings after Barcelona demonstrate the importance of Sunday’s finale, particularly after Manthey’s victory in Spain reduced TF Sport’s advantage.
However, Friday’s practice performances do not necessarily establish the competitive order for qualifying or the race. The changing track conditions, differing tyre strategies and individual team programmes could influence the classification as the weekend progresses.
Monza weekend continues with FP3 and qualifying
Kubica and AF Corse therefore conclude Friday’s running with the fastest Hypercar lap, while Proton Competition secures an impressive LMGT3 one-two. Aston Martin and BMW also demonstrated strong pace, with Tincknell and Marciello completing the leading three in the prototype category.
The changing conditions again played an important role, although the improving track allowed teams to gather more representative data during the closing stages.
For Toyota and TF Sport, the afternoon produced relatively disappointing classifications despite their championship advantages. Both will aim to improve before qualifying, particularly as their closest rivals continue preparing for the decisive final race.
The third Free Practice session will begin at 10:30 local time (CET) on Saturday, 7 November, giving the 35-car field another hour of running.
LMGT3 qualifying follows at 14:20, with Hyperpole scheduled for 14:40. Hypercar qualifying begins at 15:00, followed by Hyperpole at 15:20.
The 2026 FIA WEC season concludes with the 6 Hours of Monza on Sunday, 8 November, beginning at 11:00 local time.
