Alex Albon says Williams did not get the best from him considering he was under driving so much in 2026 F1 Hungarian GP.
The bad run for Williams F1 team seems never ending in 2026. It was another one in Hungarian GP, where even Aston Martin took a step up after they had updated chasses on the grid for the first time this season. For the Grove-based outfit, they had their old nemesis back i.e wind.
Williams has had a history of wind sensitivity and it has continued with the 2026 generation of F1 cars. Albon struggled with the wind and was under driving the car for most part of Hungarian GP; he went off at turn 4 thanks to a snap early in the race. The few laps he had with no wind, were the only ones where he could show some potential.
Albon feels Williams not getting best of him
He feels Williams hasn’t got the best of him due to his under driving. “Yeah, it’s been a bit of a trend over the weekend,” said Albon in the print media pen after F1 Hungarian GP, on his 100th race for the team. “It’s very wind effective. Honestly, it’s really…driving-wise, it’s frustrating because I can’t drive, really.
“The team’s not getting the best from me because I have to under drive so much. The gusts, the wind, the track…I think there were six laps in the race where the wind stabilised and I could finally settle down and get into a rhythm and then the wind picks up again and you’re back into that cycle.
“It feels like you’re making mistakes, but you’re not. You’re just braking at the same places, doing the same things, but just lacking consistency. Yeah, it was a battle out there for us,” summed up Albon, who notes that the performance of the Williams F1 car is not entirely unexpected.
Albon doesn’t think Williams can match Aston Martin with Baku update
The only thing which has surprised him is the gap to even Haas, who are in similar struggling zone. Albon finished two laps down to the leaders in F1 Hungarian GP but behind Haas’ Esteban Ocon. At the same time, both the Aston Martin cars finished a lap down, which shows the step they have taken.
He doesn’t think Williams can match the level of Aston Martin in Baku with their own set of update. ”Everything that happened in the race and this weekend is what I expected,” continued Albon. “I just didn’t expect for that time to be so far away. Even to Haas, it was about half a second this weekend.
“We’re not talking small numbers. We’ve seen us drop off through the year as everyone else has bought upgrades. We have to give respect to Aston Martin. I don’t think out Baku upgrade is at the level that they have put in their car.
“Unfortunately, I think I said it on tap earlier, but the Aston is going to be fast this rest of the year. I think we’re going to be helped out by some circuits down the straights. Otherwise, if it’s a corner focused circuit, we’re going to be on the back foot,” summed up Albon, with Carlos Sainz in a similar boat.
