Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley have shared their insights into Audi’s vision as they complete their full takeover of Sauber and make their F1 debut in 2026.
During a launch event in Munich on Wednesday, the German automotive brand revealed a concept livery which provides a distinct preview of their first F1 race car. The colour palette of the R26 Concept features titanium, carbon black, and Audi red, while the livery incorporates the company’s iconic four rings.
Audi, who have tasted success in various motorsport categories, will take on the 2026 F1 season with their own chassis and power unit as new technical regulations come into effect.
Since making a commitment back in 2022 to enter the pinnacle of motorsport in 2026, Audi have concentrated their efforts on building up their power unit base in Neuberg, Germany, and enhancing Sauber’s HQ in Hinwil, Switzerland, where the chassis and race team will operate from. Furthermore, they have also opened a new Technology Centre in Bicester to capitalise on the expertise available in the UK’s Motorsport Valley.
Gabriel Bortoleto, who made his debut with Sauber this season, and veteran Nico Hülkenberg, who clinched his first F1 podium at Silverstone in July, will continue into the Audi era as the squad’s driver line-up in 2026.
Binotto reveals Audi’s ambitious target
Mattia Binotto spoke at length about Audi’s ambitions at a bespoke event at the Audi Brand Experience Centre in Munich. Hailing their arrival in F1 as motorsport’s most compelling enterprise by a mile, the head of the project reflected on what it would take to challenge for the title in five years’ time.
Moreover, Binotto emphasised how setbacks can impart crucial lessons and acknowledged the human aspect that’s imperative to success in this cut-throat sport. Drawing on decades of experience in F1 with Ferrari, the 56-year-old maintained that the contributions of every single team member would drive Audi forward.
“This is the most exciting project in motorsports, if not in all sports. The goal is clear: to fight for championships by 2030. That journey takes time, the right people and a mindset of continuous improvement.
“Formula 1 is one of the most competitive environments. Becoming a champion is a journey of progress. Mistakes will happen, but learning from them is what drives transformation.
“And it’s a team effort: engineers, mechanics, designers, partners — every contribution moves us forward. Soon, the first fire-up will mark another milestone. It’s not just machinery coming to life, but the passion and ambition of hundreds becoming reality.
“Early next year, Audi’s first F1 car will take to the track for the first time. That moment will be the beginning of something special.”
Wheatley comments on what Audi will bring to F1

Jonathan Wheatley, who became Sauber’s team principal in April after an extensive 18-year stint with the Red Bull F1 team, also shared his thoughts on Audi’s larger vision at the glitzy Munich launch event. He echoed Binotto’s sentiments and revealed what the German brand aims to bring to the table in the coming years.
Wheatley highlighted how consequential it is to place their faith in the right people as they gradually transform themselves into a championship-winning outfit. Furthermore, claiming that they seek to revolutionise the notion of a racing team, the Brit added that Audi are intent on playing a fundamental role in shaping the future of F1 with their considerable talent, daring vision, and resilient mindset.
“This journey is not just about the destination but about engaging with the people who make every step possible. It is about your mindset, focus, resilience and confidence without complacency. We will face setbacks, but each one will be a learning experience that will lead to new strength.
“A culture of belief and resilience is taking shape – a team empowered to push boundaries, be courageous, learn, and improve every day. Championship-winning teams are not built on magic – they are built on people who believe: in each other, in the process, and in the destination.
“Our project is more than building a team. It is about shaping the future of F1 – with talent, visionary partners and the transformation of the Audi brand. We have a mindset that dares to redefine what a racing team can be.”
