McLaren’s rookie Taylor Barnard is having a strong season so far. The young talent is currently fourth place in the Formula E standings, just behind both Porsche drivers. He wants to beat them and take second place.
Second place is the target for Barnard
Speaking to Pit Debrief in the media pen ahead of the Berlin E-Prix, Barnard set his target in the championship. He definitely wants to beat the Porsche’s to get second behind fellow Briton Oliver Rowland, who could be crowned champion this weekend already.
“I mean, my aim is definitely second at the moment. There’s only nine points between me and P2, so that’s very much my aim. But if I can finish the season in third position as well, then that’d be a great achievement.”
Barnard hopes to do well at Berlin E-Prix
“Expectations are difficult, especially in Formula E. Things are always up and down. Of course, I got a bit of experience from here last year, so I hope to do well. And if I can score my first win where I scored my first points, that would make quite a good story,” the 20-year-old said.
Further asked on how much knowledge he was able to acquire in last year’s edition, Barnard says he will take the collected experience into the weekend.
“Of course, I’ll try and pick up as much experience as I possibly can. I’ll take that into this weekend. The track has changed very slightly, so with regards to energy saving, things like that, it does change something slightly. But my approach will stay very similar. I think it was a decent quality and a very good race for me last year, so same approach.”
Update on the driver market
In recent days, there have been reports around the driver market. It involved Barnard, who has allegedly signed a contract with DS Penske for next season. The McLaren driver didn’t want to comment much on the rumours.
“Yeah, I mean, there’s a lot of activity in the driver market at the minute, but I can’t say too much.”
