Earlier in May 2025, rumors circulated that Carlos Sainz Sr., a two-time World Rally Champion and four-time Dakar Winner, and Carlos Sainz Jr.’s father, was considering running for the FIA presidency.
Media outlets, such as Sky Sports, confirmed that Sainz Sr. was “assessing support” and potentially challenging the current FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, ahead of the election held in Tashkent on December 12, 2025.
However, earlier today, on June 25, 2025, Carlos Sainz Sr. released an official statement stating he’s stepping away from the upcoming election, at least “for now”; citing his commitment to prepare for the upcoming 2025 Dakar Rally with Ford as a key reason for taking a step back.
“This message is to publicly confirm that I have finally decided not to run for the presidency of the FIA in this year’s election,” Sainz took to Instagram to share an official statement.
He continued by saying, “I have realised that properly running for President would notably compromise my preparation for the Dakar and I do not wish to weaken my commitment to Ford and my team.”
Reports indicated that Sainz had been seeking support within motorsport, and his potential candidacy received public backing from prominent figures in Formula 1, including Max Verstappen and George Russell. However, with that came a lot of people who criticised the move, as his son Carlos Sainz Jr. is an active Formula 1 driver.
As the concerns over conflict of interest amplified, Sainz Sr. made it clear that if elected as president, he will step away from any decisions regarding his son’s career.
Though he won’t be entering the race, Sainz reaffirmed his belief in the importance of leadership that drives meaningful change in motorsport. His decision narrows the field for the December election but keeps his name in play for future FIA leadership roles.
For now, Carlos Sainz Sr. will be observing from the sideline and focusing on the ongoing changes that need to be implemented in the world of motorsports through appropriate leadership. While, focusing on doing what he does best: being a legend behind the wheel.
