Nick Cassidy is expected to leave Jaguar TCS Racing at the conclusion of the current 2024-2025 Formula E season. According to The Race, the New Zealander finalised his decision around late April or early May, during the period surrounding the 2025 Monaco E-Prix.
Reportedly, Cassidy has already signed a long-term agreement with another team. This contract reportedly extends into the Gen4 regulations era, which will begin with the 2026–2027 season.
Cassidy has not revealed the identity of his future employer. However, sources indicate that the team belongs to the Stellantis group of manufacturers. He engaged in discussions with several other teams, including the Penske operation, which currently partners with DS. However, reports suggest that Penske will end its partnership with Stellantis before the Gen4 period begins. The Race has also dismissed the likelihood of Cassidy replacing either Antonio Felix da Costa at Porsche or joining Nissan alongside Oliver Rowland.
Jaguar tenure delivers highs and frustrations
After a second-place finish with Envision Racing in the 2022/2023 season, Cassidy joined Jaguar ahead of the 2023/2024 season, partnering with fellow New Zealander Mitch Evans. He quickly found success, taking podiums in the first two rounds of the season, before securing his fifth career win, and first with his new team, in Round 3 in Diriyah. While Cassidy enjoyed a strong season, taking five more podiums, including a second win in Berlin, a costly spin in Portland derailed his campaign.
His championship hopes officially ended in the London finale last July, when Antonio Felix da Costa inadvertently damaged Cassidy’s car in the closing stages. That incident followed a period of strategic uncertainty at Jaguar, as the team attempted to choreograph both Cassidy and Evans to defend against a charging Pascal Wehrlein. Ultimately, Wehrlein triumphed over both drivers to clinch the title.
Unfortunately, Cassidy has not enjoyed the same strong start to his second season at the team. He and Evans have found the Jaguar Gen3 Evo package—the I-Type 7—challenging, making it difficult to consistently fight at the front. While Cassidy earned a third-place finish in Monaco and scored points in three other races, he currently sits 13th in the championship standings, 128 points behind leader Oliver Rowland. This marks a sharp contrast from the same point in 2024, when Cassidy led the standings. Jaguar, meanwhile, sits eighth in the Teams’ Championship standings with only 58 points, 114 off championship leaders Nissan.
Jaguar issues cautious response
In response to these reports, on Wednesday, Jaguar issued a statement addressing speculation about Cassidy’s departure. The team neither confirmed nor denied the reports, describing them as “speculative.” It emphasised that both Cassidy and the team remain focused on delivering strong performances across the remaining seven rounds of the season.
“Nick is an exceptional racing driver,” said team principal James Barclay. “Our focus at Jaguar TCS Racing is to provide him with the very best race car we can for the remainder of season eleven so he can fight for points, podiums, and wins. That work continues here in Shanghai this weekend.”
Cassidy, quoted in the same release, reiterated his determination to pursue success with Jaguar through to the end of the season. However, Cassidy has previously expressed his frustration with Jaguar’s performance this season. It is aslo widely assumed that Jaguar’s performance ceiling—limited by the I-Type 7’s development freeze—played a significant role in Cassidy’s decision.
Seeking a new challenge
As Cassidy approaches his 31st birthday, he enters a pivotal phase of his racing career. The forthcoming two to three seasons will be essential in his continued pursuit of a Formula E title.
While his departure from Jaguar remains unconfirmed, Cassidy’s anticipated move reflects both his ambition and the high demand for his abilities. As Formula E approaches the Gen4 era, Cassidy appears determined to align himself with a project that can deliver sustained performance and a realistic shot at championship success.
