The FIA has suspended Formula 1 steward Derek Warwick for making unauthorised media comments following the Spanish Grand Prix. Warwick, a former F1 driver, gave an interview to a gambling website in which he discussed the controversial late-race clash between Max Verstappen and George Russell.

By speaking publicly about the incident, Warwick violated FIA protocols, prompting the governing body to take swift disciplinary action. The FIA originally set him to serve as a driver steward for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix. However, the FIA later removed him from the role. Enrique Bernoldi will serve as his replacement. Bernoldi will officiate remotely from the FIA’s Operations Centre in Geneva.

A statement issued by the FIA said:

“Following recent unauthorised media comments, the FIA has taken the decision to suspend Derek Warwick from his duties as driver steward for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.”

“He will be replaced by Enrique Bernoldi, who will be officiating from the Remote Operations Centre in Geneva for the remainder of the event.”

“After discussion, Derek acknowledges that his comments were ill-advised in his role as an FIA steward and has apologised. Derek will resume his duties as a steward in the forthcoming Austrian Grand Prix.”

Warwick’s remarks sparked debate, as Verstappen received a 10-second penalty for the incident with Russell and now risks a race ban if he collects further penalty points. Warwick’s suspension highlights the FIA’s commitment to impartiality and confidentiality among its officials, especially during an already tense season.
