Gasly loses 2026 F1 Monaco GP podium after International Court of Appeal reinstates penalties

Pierre Gasly has lost his 2026 F1 Monaco GP podium finish after the FIA International Court of Appeal (ICA) reinstated the Alpine Driver’s penalties following appeals from McLaren and Red Bull. Isack Hadjar reclaims P3.

During the 2026 F1 Monaco GP, Pierre Gasly was slapped with two separate 5-second penalties for speeding in the pit lane during the race, which demoted the Frenchman from the podium to a distant P7. Considering Gasly was one of the only drivers to have not had his penalty absolved under the Safety Car, following Stroll’s crash, Alpine, suspecting that Gasly was wrongfully penalised, asked for a right of review for both penalties following the conclusion of the 2026 F1 Monaco GP.

After reviewing the matter, it emerged that a supposed error in measuring the distance between the pit entry and exit caused multiple drivers, including Gasly, to appear to exceed the pit lane limit. As a consequence, the Alpine drivers’ penalties were revoked by the FIA stewards, and his P3 finish was reinstated.

The decision sparked controversy at the time, considering several drivers were imposed with the same penalty and had absolved their time penalties under the Safety Car. A bit over a week after the 2026 F1 Monaco GP, McLaren and Red Bull lodged an appeal against the decision to rescind Gasly’s original time penalties. 

Reason for the ICA’s decision

Following several hearings, the ICA granted the appeals filed by McLaren and Red Bull to overturn the FIA stewards’ decision to revoke the penalties for Pierre Gasly. Today, the FIA announced the ICA’s decision to reinstate the Alpine drivers’ original penalties.

In its decision, the ICA explained that once the parameters for the pit lane speed limit for an F1 event have been set by the Official Timekeeper, and teams have calibrated their cars according to these parameters, they are valid for the duration of the competition. As a result, the court’s decision boiled down to the argument that the official measurement parameters cannot be changed during or after an event. Therefore, the Stewards’ decision to allow different parameters that proved Gasly stayed below the pit-lane limit of 60 km/h was not permissible and ultimately led to the Stewards’ decision being revoked and Gasly’s original penalties being reinstated.

Alpine statement on the decision to reinstate Gasly’s 2026 Monaco GP penalties

Following the decision by the ICA, Alpine published a statement across the team’s social media sites, noting their “disappointment and frustration” over the court’s ruling to reinstate Gasly’s 2026 F1 Monaco GP penalties. While Alpine is not pleased with the decision, the team acknowledged it and said they will focus on improving for the remainder of the 2026 F1 season.

“The team expresses its disappointment and frustration with the outcome reached by the FIA International Court of Appeal relating to the result of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix. 

“While we disagree with the decision and still fully maintain that Car #10 did not exceed the Pit Lane speed limit at any point during the race, the team acknowledges the decision of the judging panel from the recent hearing in Paris. 

“While the result is not what we had hoped for, as we feel that we have been unjustly punished, the team is firmly focused on continuing to improve its performance on track and remains in a close and very competitive Championship fight.”
