Round 10 of the 2025 F1 season is underway as FP2 has taken place at the Canadian GP, view the full report and results below.

Charles Leclerc suffered a significant accident in FP1, which took him out of the running in FP2 as the Ferrari mechanics worked on his car as a change to the survival cell is required. The Monégasque being forced to wait until FP3 to get vital track time.

McLaren wasted no time on getting out on track. They were determined to put in more representative times than the first session of the weekend. Norris crossed the line from his first push lap with a 1:13.301.

However, as those behind begun their push laps, a yellow flag was waved. The home hero, Lance Stroll was moving slowly at the side of the track where he pulled over. Stroll managed to get the car off track relatively easily, preventing a red flag. But the Canadian’s running was over for the day as he touched the wall at turn 7.

With Stroll out of the way, the grid got back to their scheduled running with a range of medium and soft compound tyres being used.

George Russell took the top spot with a 1:12.602, with Carlos Sainz just 0.162 seconds behind. Verstappen in third as he complained about the Red Bull underneath him.

Sainz was the only driver in the top five on the medium tyres, a show that the yellow walled tyres may be just as fast as the red walled C6s around Montreal.

However, on the early long runs from the likes of Fernando Alonso showed positive signs as ten laps in he hit a personal best on those soft tyres.

Halfway point in FP2 at the F1 Canadian GP

Elsewhere, on track, it was another spin for Franco Colapinto at turn 2 once again. He kept it clear of the walls and rejoined the pack. It was the same spot he suffered a spin in FP1, along with Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris spinning in the same spot.

Lewis Hamilton made it across the line, five tenths off of his old teammate’s time in front. Meanwhile, McLaren’s lack of pace continued.

Lando Norris only managed eighth place, 0.8 tenths off George Russell out front. Moments later, Oscar Piastri only found himself 13th, 1.08 seconds off the Mercedes. McLaren brought multiple upgrades to Canada, unlike Red Bull and Ferrari.

However, there are questions surrounding how well the upgrades are working. The front wing only being run in practice and changes to the front suspension upgrades only being run on Norris’ car.

Antonelli joined his teammate at the front of the field, placing himself in second and just 0.288 seconds behind Russell.

Despite the questions over McLaren, Norris was on a much cleaner push lap, sliding in third behind the Mercedes. Piastri also found more time, bumping his teammate to fourth, as the Australian took third place with a 1:12.595.

Norris went again, with a purple sector 1 slipping him into second place. The pace in the McLaren the second time round much more expected, just 0.028 away from the Mercedes in first.

One of the biggest issues in the session was the traffic, with drivers avoiding crashed around the track.

Alex Albon continued on from FP1’s impressive times, slotting himself into fourth with a 1:12.445. His teammate was only a few spots behind in seventh.

Final ten minutes

The order settled, with drivers across the grid settled into long runs, testing out the tyre degradation on the track. Some teams opted to do their long runs on the soft compound, while the majority chose to run the mediums.

The McLaren’s long pace looked strong, but Norris was suffering from graining on the front tyres, which was impacting his run.

It felt as though the McLaren’s had settled into a rhythm, but still were missing the edge they’ve seemed to have every other weekend.

The chequered flag waved, and George Russell held on to his lead with his 1:12.123. Behind the Brit was Lando Norris’ McLaren and Russell’s teammate Antonelli.
