Rafael Câmara delivered a masterclass in wet-weather control at the Hungarian GP Feature Race, taking a commanding win from pole position and securing the 2025 F3 Championship with several rounds still to go. His dominant drive not only confirmed his status as champion but also triggered a shake-up in the battle for the runner-up spot in the standings.
Câmara seals the title in style
Câmara began the Hungarian GP weekend already in a position to clinch the championship, needing to maintain at least a 40-point advantage by the chequered flag on Sunday. After starting from pole on Sunday at the 2025 Hungarian GP, the PREMA driver maximised his opportunity. In slippery conditions, he led from the rolling start and held off an early challenge from Mari Boya before steadily building a gap.
Despite multiple Safety Car interruptions, Câmara maintained full control. His pace in the closing laps allowed him to extend his lead over Boya to more than two seconds before crossing the finish line. This victory earned him 27 points, lifting his total from 129 to 156 and putting the championship mathematically out of reach for his rivals.
Boya surges to second in the standings
Mari Boya’s weekend in Budapest proved decisive for his position in the championship fight. Entering Sunday’s race, the Campos Racing driver was fourth overall on 89 points, trailing Nikola Tsolov and Tim Tramnitz. His second-place finish in the Feature Race, however, added 19 points to his tally, moving him up to 108 points and placing him firmly in second in the standings.
Boya’s consistent form in recent rounds has made him the strongest performer behind Câmara, and with three rounds remaining, he now holds a narrow two-point lead over Tsolov in the battle for vice-champion honours.
Tsolov storms through the field
Nikola Tsolov’s performance in the Feature Race was undoubtedly one of the drives of the day. Starting deep in the pack after a challenging Qualifying session, the ART Grand Prix driver steadily worked his way through the field in the wet conditions. Lap after lap, he picked off rivals with precision, ultimately gaining an extraordinary 15 positions to cross the line in sixth. As a result, his 8 points from Sunday lifted his championship total from 98 to 106, which in turn allowed him to leapfrog Tramnitz and move into third overall.
Even so, losing second place in the standings to Boya by just two points will sting. After all, Tsolov had the pace to challenge for a podium and perhaps even victory, yet his low starting position ultimately limited his final result. Looking ahead, the Bulgarian will be eager to convert his race-day speed into stronger qualifying performances in order to close the gap in the fight for second.
Tramnitz’s title hopes fade
For Tim Tramnitz, the Hungarian GP Feature Race marked the end of any lingering championship hopes. The German driver’s spin early in the race dropped him well down the order, and although he recovered to 13th, he left Budapest without adding to his tally. As a result, his points remain at 93, and he has slipped to fourth overall, now 15 points adrift of Tsolov.
With three rounds remaining, Tramnitz’s focus will likely shift towards securing a top-three finish in the final standings rather than chasing Boya and Tsolov for second.
Changes in the midfield
In addition to this, the middle of the standings also saw significant movement. Théophile Naël climbed from 60 to 70 points after finishing fifth, consolidating seventh place and closing the gap to sixth-placed Noah Strømsted, who remains on 73 points after a point-less F3 Feature Race at the 2025 Hungarian GP.
Tuukka Taponen’s podium finish was another key storyline. Notably, his third-place finish in Budapest earned him 15 points, moving him from 52 to 67 and propelling him up to eighth in the standings, just three points behind Naël.
Further down, Charlie Wurz’s fourth-place finish elevated him from 41 to 53 points, a jump that moved him into the top ten. Laurens Van Hoepen also made gains, moving from 48 to 52 points after finishing eighth, and now sits just one point behind Wurz in eleventh.
Lower order sees minimal change
The lower half of the standings saw fewer adjustments. Alessandro Giusti gained 2 points for ninth place, moving from 55 to 57 points but slipping to ninth overall due to Taponen’s podium. Brando Badoer’s seventh place earned him 6 points, taking him from 7 to 13 points and lifting him to 23rd overall.
Most of the drivers from 17th place downwards left Hungary without scoring, and the bottom seven in the championship — including Gerrard Xie, Joshua Dufek, Jesse Carrasquedo, Nicola Lacorte, Javier Sagrera, Nikita Johnson, Nicola Marinangeli, and José Garfias — remain on single-digit points or none at all.
Outlook for the remainder of the season
With the 2025 F3 Championship decided after the Hungarian GP Feature Race, attention now turns to the fight for second place. While Boya leads the way on 108 points, Tsolov sits just two points behind on 106, while Tramnitz lurks on 93. The margins are tight enough that any slip-up could change the order instantly.
In the midfield, the battles between Naël, Taponen, Giusti, Wurz, and Van Hoepen promise to remain fierce. With several circuits ahead that reward aggressive overtaking and tyre management, there is still potential for large swings in the points table.
As for Câmara, the remaining races will offer him the chance to push for one of the highest points totals in recent F3 history, and he will undoubtedly be aiming to add more wins to an already dominant campaign.
