Formula E returns to Mexico this weekend for the Hankook Mexico City E-Prix, celebrating the championship’s 150th race at one of its most demanding and fastest tracks.

A track that makes champions

Since joining Formula E in Season 2, the special Autódromo Hermanos Rodríquez will now make its tenth appearance on the calendar. The 2.605km layout features fast straights, 16 challenging corners, a sharp hairpin, and a technical section through the iconic Foro Sol stadium, where ATTACK MODE lies.

The track has seen seven different winners, from Jerome D’Ambrosio as its first, to di Grassi, ABT, Evans, Wehrlein, Dennis, and Rowland. Out of these seven drivers, di Grassi and Wehrlein are the only drivers to have triumphed at the circuit more than once.

However, what makes the track special is that its past three winners have gone on to claim the Drivers’ World Championship in the same season. In Season 9, Andretti’s Jake Dennis took victory and became World Champion, followed by Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein in Season 10, and reigning World Champion Oliver Rowland in Season 11.

São Paulo E-Prix chaos

The Season 12 opener in São Paulo was marked by seven retirements, heavy accidents, and a decisive win for Jake Dennis. Pascal Wehrlein initially took pole position but was demoted three places for a pit-lane wheelspin, promoting Jake Dennis to the front. Lap 1 saw chaos unfold as De Vries hit the left rear of Dan Ticktum and almost took out his teammate, Mortara, as both went off track. Ticktum became the first to retire several laps after the incident.

Later, Norman Nato retired on track after making minor contact with Rowland, while di Grassi collided with Mortara, ending both drivers’ races. More retirements came as Evans found the wall at Turn 10 and Vergne’s Citroën suffered technical issues.

In the closing laps, rookie Pepe Martí faced a dramatic airborne crash during a Full Course Yellow, with his CUPRA Kiro catching fire after failing to slow down and rolling over the two cars in front. Fortunately, he escaped unharmed but will start the Mexico City E-Prix with a back-of-the-grid penalty.

Amid the chaos, Jake Dennis claimed his first victory since 2024, becoming the first driver to convert pole into a win at São Paulo. To complete the podium, Oliver Rowland finished second, and Nick Cassidy claimed P3 for Citroën Racing’s FE debut after starting in P15.

Drivers to watch in Mexico City

Following the dramatic São Paulo E-Prix, the Mexico City E-Prix offers new opportunities for drivers to shine. Pascal Wehrlein will be one to watch as he holds the best qualifying record at the circuit with four poles and two wins. At the same time, championship leader Jake Dennis will aim to extend his advantage, currently holding 25 points, with reigning champion Oliver Rowland close behind on 19.

Nick Cassidy will be looking to continue Citroën Racing’s strong start to their debut season after impressing in São Paulo by charging from 15th on the grid to claim a P3 podium. Despite a tough FE debut, Martí showed glimpses of pace and will be eager to impress this weekend.

Every driver will be chasing pole position and victory, aware that success in Mexico City has recently paved the path for the season’s Formula E World Champion.
