The Formula E Madrid E-Prix began with FP1 as the drivers prepared to head out on track for Round 6. The drivers were ready for action on the 3.934 km track. Expectations were high for home hero Pepe Marti ahead of the weekend’s first session.
Green lights out
40 minutes were on the clock as the Formula E weekend got underway. One by one, the drivers began setting fast laps. Sebastian Buemi had a delayed start to the practice as he stayed in the pits. The top spot kept changing as the field got familiar with the Jarama circuit.
The first ten minutes of the session saw Mortara on top with a lap time of 1:32.55, followed by Müller and Cassidy in third.
The yellow flags were out as Nyck de Vries found the wall. The first practice session of the weekend got red-flagged after de Vries moved into the braking zone and found the wall. The crash saw the Dutchman leaving the front wing on track before heading back to the pits.
Session resumed at the Formula E Madrid E-Prix
As the track was cleared and the session resumed, 25 minutes were left on the clock. A majority of the drivers headed out on track quickly. With the action resuming, everyone tried to extract as much as possible from the cars.
Vergne went wide but quickly found the top spot with a solid 1:29.95. Behind him were Mortara with a 1:30.04, followed by Cassidy with a 1:30.26.
Last ten minutes of FP1
The last ten minutes of action saw little change in the top spots.
Dan Ticktum found the gravel as he was late on the brakes and locked up. Ticktum managed to drag himself out of the gravel and back to the track. After his off-track adventure, he went fastest in sectors 1 and 2, straight to the top of the timing sheets. He set a great lap time of 1:29.40.
As the chequered flag waved, Dan Ticktum secured the top spot. Behind him were de Vries and Vergne. The first session closed with the top ten separated by narrow gaps.
