Oscar Piastri finishes ahead of Russell and Verstappen in FP2 for the F1 Spanish GP, full report and results below.
Despite the new technical directive coming into play on this weekend’s Spanish GP, McLaren, with Lando Norris, was still the class of the field in FP1.
However, it remains to be seen what impact TD018 will have across the grid in the upcoming sessions.
The temperatures are slightly higher than in the previous session, with air temperature at 31 degrees and the track temperature at a blistering 48°C.
Esteban Ocon and Alex Albon are back behind the wheel of the Haas and Williams after giving way for Ryo Hirakawa and Victor Martins in FP1.
Opening stages
FP2 for the Spanish GP kicks off with several cars leaving the pit at green light. The Ferrari of Charles Leclerc is the first car out.
With everyone eager to hit the track, we see quite a few cars lining up to head out. Four minutes into the session, and we have all the cars out on track.
As the first timed laps come in, it’s first Leclerc, then Alonso, and finally Norris who puts himself on top with a 1:13.636.
Except for Franco Colapinto and Lance Stroll, who are using the hardest compound, everyone else has opted for the medium compound tyre.
Ten minutes in, we have a brief yellow flag for Ollie Bearman, who spins at high speed in Turn 3, but is lucky to avoid the wall.
Almost fifteen minutes into the session, we have a new leader with George Russell setting the fastest time, a 1:13.501, a bit over a tenth faster than the previous leader, Lando Norris.
With the first laps completed, the drivers pile back into the pits, only the Ferrari and Racing Bulls duos, as well as Ocon in the Haas, remain on the track.
Soft tyre runs
The Mercedes drivers are the first drivers to hit the track on the soft tyre, with Russell improving on his own time by nearly half a second.
Verstappen and Norris have also mounted the softs. However, their initial laps are not fast enough to take the lead from Russell, with both setting an identical lap time of 1:13.070.
Running slightly out of sync, Oscar Piastri is the new leader of this session, clocking in at 1:12.760.
Our top 5 after 20 minutes of this Spanish GP FP2 session: Piastri, Russell, Verstappen, Norris, and Leclerc.
With only 20 minutes left in this session, most drivers have ditched the soft tyre in favor of the medium tyre.
Closing stages
Not much happens in the closing stages of the session as the teams are focused on long runs.
The Mercedes duo elected to conduct their long runs on the soft tyres only, mounting the medium in the closing stages.
Liam Lawson is the first driver to take the flag.
FP2 of the Spanish GP concludes with the drivers lining up on the grid to do a practice start.
