Liam Lawson had a weekend to forget at the F1 British GP after retiring on the opening lap.

Coming into Silverstone, the Racing Bulls driver was on a high, after scoring his highest finish the weekend before in Austria with a superb P6.

However, the British weather did not come to play, and made track conditions tricky from the very start of the race.

What happened?

Lawson found himself starting P15 on the grid. Whilst several drivers decided to try their luck with slick tyres, Lawson stayed on the intermediates, as he felt that the final sector was ‘still very wet.’

A strong start sent him side-by-side with Haas driver Esteban Ocon going into turn 5. When he attempted to avoid Lawson’s former teammate Yuki Tsunoda who made it three-wide, Ocon caught Lawson’s left-rear wheel and sent him spinning into the barriers, ending his race.

When asked about the race, Lawson said in the print media pen that he was just ‘trying to survive.’

“It was a good start. We would have had a very fast car today in these conditions. It suits what we were running this weekend.

“I was really just trying to survive. I wasn’t trying to do anything aggressive.

“Unfortunately, I can’t see two cars next to me. We came out of Turn 4, and I just saw Esteban.”

Looking forward

The young Kiwi has had a difficult first half of his first full season. Poor performance in the Red Bull car led to him being demoted to the sister team after two rounds. Despite the different car, he has continued to struggle to score consistent points.

When asked what he hopes to achieve over the next 12 races, Lawson says that he is just looking to improve on his point-scoring results. Aside from Austria, Monaco is the only other round where he bagged points.

“Score Points. Just score more points. We missed points today,” Liam Lawson stated.

“We’ve had a very fast car recently and missed points. Austria was great, but one great weekend is not enough. We need to keep doing it.”
