Mahindra Racing has just announced the latest addition to their full Formula E lineup for the 2025-2026 season, with the signing of former McLaren and Maserati talent Jake Hughes.

An experienced driver to team up with Maini

The British driver brings on his significant motorsport experience, ranging from Formula 1 to the feeder series. Hughes’s career in Formula E saw him complete three full time seasons, after debuting with Mercedes in the 2020 Marrakech Rookie test. Consequently, he made his official debut with McLaren alongside Sam Bird, and over the span of his two years stint with the papaya team he secured four pole positions and a second place in Shanghai.

After the departure of McLaren from the championship, in Season 11 Hughes moved to Maserati, where he partnered with Vandoorne and achieved another podium in Jeddah.

Hughes will join Mahindra’s well tested and reconfirmed full time driver duo of Edoardo Mortara and former F1 driver Nyck de Vries. He will take on the role of Reserve and Development driver alongside Kush Maini, who will also compete in Formula 2 with ART Grand Prix and serve as Alpine F1 Reserve Driver.

Hughes’s first Mahindra Formula E impressions

Hughes has already begun his career with Mahindra Formula E by undertaking simulator duties. Additionally, he expressed his pleasure with the announcement as he said.

“I’m excited to begin this next chapter in my Formula E career with Mahindra Racing. What Mahindra have built over the past few seasons is very impressive, and it’s clear that the team is on a really positive trajectory.”

“I’m looking forward to playing my part and helping to move this team – which is one of the championship’s iconic names – back towards the front of the grid.

Team Principal Frederic Bertrand was ecstatic with the signing as well. In fact, he saluted the arrival of the Brit to the Indian outlet as follows:

“It’s fantastic to welcome Jake to Mahindra Racing as our new Reserve and Simulator Driver.”

“Jake gives us additional strength in depth in our driver line-up, and equally a very experienced, talented driver who can make a significant contribution across our GEN3 Evo and GEN4 test programmes.”

“We’re very excited to work with him and, alongside Nyck, Edo and Kush, believe this gives us one of the most complete and experienced driver line-ups in Formula E.”
