Nico Hülkenberg has shared his opinions on Gabriel Bortoleto’s rookie F1 season so far and their personal relationship at Sauber. The German heaped praise on the 20-year-old, as the Hinwil-based team now finds itself on an upward trajectory following the introduction of an aggressive development programme for the C45 in Barcelona.

Although Bortoleto failed to score his maiden F1 points in the first ten rounds of the 2025 season, he has managed to score thrice in the last four races. The Hungarian GP before the summer break also saw him secure his career-best finish of sixth place, while his experienced teammate finished outside the top ten.

As it stands, Bortoleto leads the qualifying battle 8-6, highlighting his strong one-lap pace against the veteran Hülkenberg. Even though the 38-year-old still holds a head-to-head advantage when it comes to Grand Prix results, the tide might turn in the Brazilian’s favour with ten more rounds to go.

Hülkenberg confident Bortoleto has everything to excel in F1

Speaking in a print media session ahead of the Hungarian GP, Nico Hülkenberg opened up about how Gabriel Bortoleto has fared thus far in his rookie F1 season. Complimenting the latest F2 champion’s raw speed, the German spoke highly of his work ethic and noted that he possesses all the right qualities to develop into a world-class driver.

Revealing that he has been able to observe up close how Bortoleto navigates through different race weekends, Hülkenberg also acknowledged that the rookie has been a big source of motivation.

“Yeah, good. I think, you know, he’s a very young, bright, very fast guy. He’s very dedicated, very focused, works really hard. He definitely has the right attitude and he’s got the speed.

“So, you know, it’s very impressive for me. For a rookie, seeing him that close as a teammate, seeing his data, listening to what he has to say after sessions and races. I think it’s very, very encouraging.

“And, you know, he has everything you need to become a great driver and to have a long, successful career.”

Asked whether it has been astounding to see an F2 graduate demonstrate a high level of competitiveness during his rookie F1 season, Nico Hülkenberg disclosed that he was unfamiliar with Gabriel Bortoleto’s junior career and achievements. Additionally, he admitted that it has indeed been a surprise to witness how the Brazilian has made a solid start to life in the pinnacle of motorsport.

“Yeah, to be honest, I didn’t know much about him. So, yeah, no, it’s definitely a surprise.”

In terms of his personal relationship with Bortoleto, Hülkenberg commented that he shares a very healthy dynamic with his rookie teammate. Hailing their competitive partnership as a positive influence, the one-time podium finisher maintained that it has not only pushed each other but also the team forward.

“It’s very, very good. It’s very healthy. I think, you know, we get along really well but we push each other.

“It is competitive. But it is also in the interest of the team and, you know, helping each other at the balancing of each other. So it’s been very positive and enjoyable.”
