Oscar Piastri heads into the F1 Qatar GP weekend knowing that he could, mathematically, lose his place in the title fight. However, the McLaren driver insists that his approach will remain unchanged, focusing solely on what is within his control.

During Thursday’s media session, Piastri discussed his feelings on the increasing stakes as the championship battle intensifies. He emphasised that his approach to every race, regardless of where the season stands, remains the same.

“Not necessarily, no. I mean, I think you know every weekend you try to get the best result you can, and whether that’s round one or round 23, that’s the same mentality,” he said.

He acknowledged the standings but remains focused on controlling what is within his power.

“Ultimately, the best way of keeping my hopes in as good a shape as I can is trying to go out and win and get the best results I can.”

No team orders to come into play

With Max Verstappen now tied on points with him at 366, questions soon turned to the matter of team orders. However, Piastri quickly made clear that he would remain in the fight for as long as the numbers allow. He revealed that, although they had discussed the topic briefly, they had already settled on a conclusion.

“We’ve had a very brief discussion on it and the answer is no,” he said. “I’m still equal on points with Max and I’ve got a decent shot of still winning it if things go my way, so yeah, that’s how we’ll play.”

He gave a measured answer, reflecting McLaren’s equal-opportunity stance and his determination to stay in the fight. It is a reminder that he is still in contention, and that, mathematically, the door to the title remains open.

Piastri focused on maximising his efforts in final two round

With the season rapidly nearing its end and the title fight intensifying, Piastri discussed the mood within his camp, especially his talks with manager Mark Webber. Piastri struck a balance between cautious optimism and clear-eyed realism.

“I think, you know, there’s still a chance and it’s played out that way a couple of times before, so I know it’s not impossible,” he explained.

However, he didn’t exaggerate his chances. He spoke honestly about the difficulties he faces.

“Obviously, I also know that it’s a bit of an outside shot. You know, I can’t just rely on, you know, even if I have a perfect final two weekends, I can’t just rely on that, you know. I need other things to go my way and I’m very aware of that.”

“So, I think for me, I’m just going to try and have the best weekends I can, which I try and do every weekend, and see what happens to everyone else basically,” he said.

As the F1 Qatar GP approaches, shaping up to be a decisive penultimate round, Piastri enters with clear intent. He plans to focus on delivering his best performance and controlling what he can. He knows other factors will play out as they will.
