Young Anglo-American racer Sebastian Wheldon has taken the next step in his rapidly developing career by signing with MP Motorsport for the 2026 FIA Formula Regional European Championship (FREC). At just 17 years old, the St. Petersburg, Florida native continues his climb through the European single-seater ranks, entering only his second full season on the continent.
Strong foundations built in Formula 4 with continued progress in Formula Regional
Wheldon arrives at MP Motorsport following an impressive 2025 campaign across both the Italian F4 and Euro4 championships. He secured third place overall in Italian F4, delivering seven wins, two pole positions and six fastest laps. Moreover, he maintained strong consistency in Euro4, finishing fourth with an additional win, two podiums and three fastest laps.
In addition, he demonstrated his raw pace on the global stage at the end-of-year F4 World Cup in Macau. There, he claimed fourth place and set the fastest lap, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most promising young drivers in the field.
Earlier in 2026, Wheldon sharpened his skills in the Formula Regional Middle East (FRME) Trophy. He achieved a pole position and three podium finishes, ultimately securing fifth in the standings. This experience provided valuable preparation ahead of his full-time FREC campaign.
Now, having freshly departed PREMA Racing, he joins MP Motorsport’s three-car line-up alongside Alexander Abkhazava and Zhenrui ‘Newman’ Chi, all competing in the Tatuus-Toyota F3-T326 chassis.
Wheldon confident ahead of new challenge in 2026 FREC as MP Motorsport emphasises support
Wheldon expressed clear enthusiasm about the move and his early experience with the team:
“I’m delighted to become part of MP Motorsport’s FIA FREC line-up for the 2026 season”, said Wheldon. “Their pace was impressive when I raced them in the Formula Regional Middle East Trophy, so it feels good to be on their side now! I’m happy with our progress during our first tests together at Hockenheim and Paul Ricard, and we will work hard to arrive fully prepared to fight for the top spots in the first round at the Red Bull Ring later this month.”
MP Motorsport team principal Sander Dorsman also voiced strong support for the young driver:
“We are all extremely pleased that Sebastian has decided to join MP for the upcoming FIA FREC season”, said Sander Dorsman, MP Motorsport’s team principal. “He was one to watch in his two American racing seasons, following an impressive karting career, and he has continued his mercurial rise in Europe. I’m convinced that he will be one of this season’s stars. With Alex, Newman and Sebastian on board, our line-up offers the strength in depth needed to challenge for the teams’ title as well.”
These remarks underline the team’s belief in Wheldon’s ability to make an immediate impact.
A career built on momentum with eyes fixed on the future
Before moving to Europe, Wheldon established a strong record in the United States. He won the 2023 Skip Barber Formula Race Series with six victories and ten fastest laps. Subsequently, he stepped up to USF Juniors in 2024, finishing third in the standings with four wins, two poles and five fastest laps.
He also gained early international experience with a successful outing in the UAE Formula Trophy for Formula 4 cars, which preceded his full 2025 campaign in the F4 Middle East Championship and his dual participation in Italian F4 and Euro4.
With proven speed, consistent results and strong backing from MP Motorsport, Wheldon enters the 2026 FIA FREC season as a driver to watch. As the championship begins, he aims to translate his upward trajectory into podium finishes and, potentially, a title challenge.
