Ugo Ugochukwu secured his maiden FIA Formula 3 (F3) victory in the 2026 Australian GP Feature Race, overcoming an eventful opening lap and putting a 6 second gap between himself and Freddie Slater in P2, until a late safety car was called and the race was neutralised.

Starting from the front row, the American overtook team mate Théophile Naël early in the race, ultimately controlling the race from the front in what he called the “perfect start to the season.”

Earlier in the weekend, Ugochukwu had shown strong pace, finishing Friday’s Free Practice session 0.4 seconds clear of Van Amersfoort Racing’s Brando Badoer in second. However, he narrowly missed out on pole position in Qualifying after teammate Théophile Naël snatched the top spot in the closing seconds, leaving Ugochukwu to start from P2.

Despite the setback, the American remained undeterred, fighting back in the F3 Feature Race to secure his maiden victory.

Early setback before charge to the lead

Speaking during the 2026 Australian GP F3 Post Feature Race press conference, with Pit Debrief in attendance, Ugochukwu described how he quickly found himself shuffled back into third after a tight run into Turn 1.

“Yeah, it was a good race overall. It was a bit tight into T1, so I lost out, fell back to P3, but I felt the pace at the beginning was really good. So, you know, I went for the moves and got into the lead just to try to manage my race from there in clean air.”

Once out in front, his focus quickly shifted to managing the race and the tyres, a challenge that defined much of the Feature Race.

“And yeah, everything was working pretty well. Yeah, as you said, tyre management was really crucial. Yeah, just trying to manage the tyre as best as possible, but sometimes with the graining you can lose a lot of lap time and then it comes back to you.”

Managing tyres and late-race pressure

Despite building a gap during the middle phase of the race, Ugochukwu had to stay alert as the closing laps approached. With 3 laps to go, however, a safety car was brought out for Woohyun Shin as he crashed into the barriers at Turn 6.

“So, you know, I was always on it with everything. Towards the end, you know, my engineer was keeping me updated with the times and stuff. So Fred [Slater] started to get a little bit quick at the end.”

“So, you know, I knew I had to manage the tyre well and also keep my pace good just in case, you know, I came under attack towards the end. But yeah, all in all it’s been a perfect start to the season really. From Friday I was feeling really good in this track and yeah, we managed to have a really clean weekend and execute everything pretty well.”

Clean air proved crucial to controlling the race, but getting there required a careful balance between aggression and tyre preservation.

“Yeah, it was important, of course, but at the same time I had to make sure I didn’t burn through my tyres. So, you know, I was managing both things at once. I felt my pace was good enough to go for the moves without sliding too much and stuff. So yeah, it worked out pretty well at the end all in all.”

A strong start to a long 2026 F3 season

With the 2026 F3 Australian GP round marking the opening event of the season, Ugochukwu was quick to stress the importance of consistency over the long campaign ahead.

“Yeah, it’s definitely a long season ahead. You know, we’ve had a good start but we got to keep pushing and keep delivering good results. So yeah, we’re gonna, I think, just take it race by race really.”

“Same as we did for this one. Trying to maximise every weekend and then I’m sure we’ll be in a good place at the end of the season.”

Racing closely with team mates

Racing closely with teammates can sometimes present its own challenges, particularly when both drivers are fighting at the front. However, Ugochukwu explained that clear communication beforehand helped ensure things remained controlled on track during the F3 Feature Race at the Australian GP.

“Yeah, I think you need to be a bit careful, but same as any other driver on the grid. Obviously, you don’t want to crash because you’re not going to score any points.”

“So that goes the same when I’m racing everybody. But of course, we had a little talk before the race starting P1, P2 to be smart and work with each other as much as possible. So yeah, that worked pretty well.”

“I mean, I managed to have a pretty clean move. And after that, we were kind of had a steady gap to each other. So it all went pretty smoothly.”

Confidence from the F3 Australian GP round

A victory in the opening round of the 2026 F3 season provides a valuable platform for the year ahead, particularly for a second-year driver widely expected to be among the championship contenders.

When asked by Pit Debrief on how the positive result from this weekend would impact his confidence heading into the rest of the season, the American spoke highlighting about maximising every weekend when you have the chance.

“Yeah, of course, it’s great to have such a good start. It’s really important to, you know, hit the ground running and score good points throughout the first part of the season. Puts us in a much better position.”

“But yeah, like I said before, it’s still round one. So, you know, we’re going to keep pushing. I’m sure not every weekend is going to be as simple.”

“So we got to maximise, you know, every single weekend. And, you know, I’m sure there’s going to be other drivers coming to the front as well, which weren’t there this weekend. So yeah, the main thing is always being at the front, always collecting the points.”

In particular, there are many drivers who have more experience on European tracks, so he believes the fight will be close throughout the season.

“You know, we’re going to many European tracks, which Fred [Slater] knows. So I’m sure he’ll be there as well. And, you know, I’m looking forward to having good battles throughout the season.”

Balancing confidence and patience

Despite the strong result, Ugochukwu emphasised that the key to a successful season lies in maintaining the right mindset, being confident, but not complacent.

“Yeah, definitely. I mean, I’m always confident.”

“I think already coming into round one, I was pretty confident we can have a good result. But at the same time, we need to stay calm and know that there’s a long way to go and keep looking race by race. And yeah, I think if we keep battling at the front, you know, we should have a nice ending for the season.”

Off-season preparation paying dividends at the F3 Australian GP

The victory also reflects the progress Ugochukwu made during the winter months. During the break, the American travelled to New Zealand to compete in the Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy (CTFROT), where he claimed multiple victories and secured the title. He also enjoyed encouraging results during F3 pre-season testing.

When asked by Pit Debrief about his progress over the winter and his Feature Race victory in Melbourne, Ugochukwu said he was pleased to see the work he had put in beginning to translate into results so early in the season.

“Yeah, I think it’s really good to have, you know, many wins coming throughout this first part of the year. I think it shows not only my performances at the start of 2026, but also, you know, what I was doing in 2025, which I believe, you know, the results weren’t there to show it. But I think, you know, the people inside knew the performance I was doing.”

“So it’s good to put it all together and prove it into real results at the start of 2026.”

Focus on execution despite penalties

Late-race developments, including penalties for rivals and a Safety Car that bunched up the field, added further complexity to the closing stages of the race.

Both teammate Théophile Naël and TRIDENT’s Noah Strømsted received penalties for separate infringements during the race, dropping them from P2 and P4 respectively.

Ugochukwu, however, said he was unaware of the penalties during the race and remained focused on executing his own race plan rather than external factors.

“Yeah, you know, I wasn’t informed about this stuff during the race, but I just tried to continue doing what I was doing, really. Yeah, keep driving fast and managing the tyre, really, for the end. So I had a little bit of a buffer to Theo [Naël], so he wasn’t exactly in my DRS.”

“But yeah, his five-second penalty [in regards to Naël] obviously meant that my next real competitor at the moment was in P3. So it just meant I had an even bigger buffer. And yeah, it was just a bit unfortunate for the safety car, because that bunched up the group.”

“And I’m sure the team is a bit frustrated that they lost a bit of points there.”

With his maiden Feature Race victory and 25 points from weekend, Ugochukwu leaves Melbourne at the top of the FIA F3 Drivers’ Championship standings at the conclusion of Round 1, carrying early momentum into the next round of the season.
