It was a perfect start to the season for Mercedes. George Russell converted pole into a win, with Kimi Antonelli coming back through after a tough start to finish 2nd.
Ferrari were comfortably second fastest. Charles Leclerc led home a rejuvenated Lewis Hamilton for a very good 3-4. World Champions Lando Norris and Max Verstappen rounded out the big six.
Heartbreak and disappointment
There was also heartbreak for some big names. On his Red Bull debut, Isack Hadjar had a spectacular failure. Even bigger pain came for Oscar Piastri as he crashed out on a sighting lap to the grid.
Alongside the expected huge disappointment for Aston Martin, Williams had a Melbourne nightmare. A complete lack of pace and issues saw Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz in P12 and P15 at the end.
Joy
Once again, Haas punched above their weight. Ollie Bearman was the lead midfield driver as the team led by Ayao Komatsu bagged six massive points. He eventually got past the incredibly impressive Arvid Lindblad who bagged P8 on debut.
It was also a huge debut for Audi as Gabriel Bortoleto snagged two points with a fine drive. Pierre Gasly completed the points scorers.
Sergio Pérez also got to the flag on Cadillac’s F1 debut, bagging valuable mileage for the team.
