The 2026 F1 Australian GP featured many twists and turns, but also many firsts — including Audi’s debut with Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto’s first outing for their new team. Unfortunately for one of them, things took an unexpected turn before the race could begin.
Hülkenberg qualified eleventh during the 2026 F1 Australian GP, where he missed out on Q3 by less than a tenth of a second as Bortoleto got through. However, come race day, the driver had a good starting position at the Albert Park Circuit. But for reasons unbeknownst to the team, his Audi stalled before the lights went green for the 2026 F1 Australian GP, resulting in a ‘DNS’.
The incident occurred as the driver was on his way to the grid during the formation lap, before an unidentified technical issue prevented him from participating in the team’s first Grand Prix.
The Audi driver was second in a long list of DNF’s that unfolded over the course of the Grand Prix. Other notable names include McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, Red Bull Racing’s Isack Hadjar, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, and Valtteri Bottas, who faced the same fate as Hülkenberg during Cadillac’s debut.
A “frustrating” start for Nico Hülkenberg at the 2026 F1 Australian GP
Following the race, the Audi driver told the official website that it was “frustrating and bitter for the team” to have only one of the cars out and about on the track — especially after what shaped up to be a promising weekend.
The unexpected issue meant Hülkenberg failed to start, which denied him the opportunity to gain valuable race mileage in what had otherwise been a promising weekend.
“Very unfortunate not to make the start at all. Missing out on learning is obviously frustrating and bitter for the team,” he shared.
Audi’s issue is under investigation after the Australian GP
Both Audis kept up an outstanding momentum throughout the 2026 F1 Australian GP weekend. P9 and P10 during FP1; P12 and P14 in FP2; P9 and P14 in FP3. Now, when it comes to identifying the core issue at hand, Hülkenberg was unsure as to what went wrong with the car at the last moment.
“We’re not exactly sure yet,” he admitted. “You know, we developed some sort of technical problem on the laps to grid.”
He considered that the problem wasn’t a trivial one that could be resolved within a lap or two.
“It’s something we couldn’t fix quickly. So obviously they’re taking the car apart now and investigating what happened.”
Hülkenberg focuses on the silver lining for Audi after the 2026 F1 Australian GP
Despite Hülkenberg’s disappointment, there was a silver lining to be proud of. The weekend still produced a positive result for Audi, as teammate Gabriel Bortoleto secured points with a ninth-place finish at the 2026 F1 Australian GP, and Hülkenberg was quick to highlight the significance of the result for the team’s campaign.
“Gabi got P9 in the bank. So, you know, starting with points immediately as Audi is, I think, also worth mentioning and very positive.”
Although the race ended before it began for Hülkenberg, the veteran driver remains focused on analysing the issue and moving forward as the season continues. He also suggested the team could have delivered a stronger result without the technical setback.
“Without the issue we faced, I think it could have been quite a good day for the team altogether. But it’s part of racing.”
