At the F2 2026 Australian GP, Nikola Tsolov and Joshua Dürksen discussed the possibility of moving to Formula E. In recent years, there has been a rise in racers switching from feeder series like Formula 2 to Formula E. While the two categories can be vastly different, as Formula E is an all-electric series, the experience from feeder series can be fundamental to succeeding in FE. Drivers such as Taylor Barnard, Zane Maloney, and most recently, Pepe Marti made the move to Formula E. The move to the electric series could further inspire other young drivers to follow the same path as they progress up the motorsport ladder.
On Tuesday, it was announced that F2 veteran Richard Verschoor and Hugh Barter will participate in the Formula E Rookie Test in Madrid. Verschoor will be driving for Lola for his first Formula E outing. Barter, on the other hand, will get behind the wheel of an FE car for the fourth time.
The possibility of Formula E for F2 drivers
At the F2 Australian GP Press Conference, Pit Debrief asked Tsolov and Dürksen whether they would consider Formula E or were solely focused on the route to Formula 1. As the Bulgarian only moved to F2 this season, he emphasised that it would be too early to tell.
“Yeah, for me, it’s quite early to say because I mean, I’m just joining F2 now, and I think still my path is Formula 1. Obviously, how things turn out in the future is something no one can say, so hopefully if everything goes to plan, that’s not where I’m heading to and hopefully F1 is where I end up.” Tsolov explained.
The F2 2026 Australian GP brought on lots of drama and speed. The Red Bull junior stormed to victory in Formula 2 at the first round of the Championship. While the weekend started tough for the Campos driver, it turned around at the Feature Race. Tsolov fought his way through the field from P5 to P1. After a brilliant drive, he left Melbourne as the leader of the Championship.
Dürksen on path from F2 to F1 after the F2 2026 Australian GP
Joshua Dürksen had the opposite experience, driving to victory in the Sprint while the Feature was less fruitful. Starting from second place on the grid, Lap 2 already saw the Paraguayan take the lead. From there on, he delivered a controlled drive and secured the win. The Feature was less joyful for the Invicta driver. He was set to start from ninth on the grid. The eventful race brought plenty of penalties. Dürksen was penalised for a false start, receiving a 5-second penalty. After the dramatic race, he finished P10.
Asked by Pit Debrief about his thoughts on the possibility of going to Formula E, Dürksen stated:
“Yeah, for me, I think it’s also a bit early to say, but what I’ve learned in these two years is that everything can change from one day to another. So I guess it depends on my position next year.
I mean, it will depend on how I am doing with the results of how the F1 paddock is moving, how the Formula E paddock is moving. So I think there are many factors that have to come together in order to take a decision. But as I told you, it’s still too far away to say if I would go or if I wouldn’t go because as Nikola said, I have the same target, which is F1 and at the moment I will give everything in order to make it to F1.”
Although both drivers claim it is too early to tell, it still remains a possibility to see them behind the wheel of an FE car in the future.
