The FIA Formula Regional European Championship (FREC) continues its 2026 pre-season preparations as teams move from Circuit Paul Ricard to Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. This marks the final stage of a three-part testing programme ahead of the 2026 campaign.
Previously, the series opened its testing schedule at Hockenheimring in late March. However, mixed weather conditions disrupted running, limiting valuable track time for several teams. Nevertheless, preparations now intensify as the championship edges closer to its season opener, scheduled for 24–26 April in Spielberg.
Importantly, this year introduces the all-new Tatuus T-326, signalling a fresh technical chapter for the series. As a result, pre-season testing plays a critical role in helping teams understand and optimise the new machinery.
Therefore, the upcoming sessions at the Red Bull Ring will provide a final opportunity to refine setups and gather crucial performance data before competitive racing begins.
Standout performers across early tests
Despite challenging conditions in Germany, Norway’s Marcus Saeter topped the timesheets for G4 Racing at Hockenheim. His performance set an early benchmark as teams began their preparations.
Subsequently, attention shifted to France, where Brazil’s Gabriel Gomez impressed with newcomer Rodin Motorsport at Paul Ricard.
In addition, several rising stars showcased their potential across the remaining sessions. Alexandre Munoz, the reigning French F4 champion, made a strong debut with ART Grand Prix. Meanwhile, Kean Nakamura-Berta, the Italian F4 title winner, also demonstrated competitive pace with Prema Racing.
Furthermore, Emanuele Olivieri emerged as the fastest overall on the second day at Paul Ricard, finishing ahead of his R-ace GP teammate Rashid Al Dhaheri.
Spielberg provides final benchmark ahead of 2026 FREC opener
Now, the focus shifts fully to Spielberg, where teams will complete two crucial days of testing across Saturday and Sunday. Given the short turnaround from the previous round, teams must act quickly to apply lessons learned.
Moreover, the Red Bull Ring offers a representative challenge, making it an ideal venue to finalise preparations. Consequently, performances here could provide a strong indication of the competitive order ahead of the season opener.
Following the Spielberg test, the championship will pause for 18 days before returning to the same circuit for the opening round. This break allows teams to analyse data and fine-tune their packages.
Ultimately, with a new car, a highly competitive grid, and limited preparation time, the 2026 season promises to begin with intensity. As the testing programme concludes, teams will aim to carry momentum into what is expected to be a closely fought campaign.
