Porsche has unveiled its future Formula E Gen4 challenger, the 975 RSE, marking a major leap in performance, efficiency, and technology for the championship’s next era.
Porsche has officially presented the Porsche 975 RSE, its next-generation challenger for the upcoming Formula E Gen4 regulations, signalling a significant step forward for all-electric motorsport, as detailed in the team’s official presentation.
Set to debut next season, the 975 RSE succeeds the highly successful Porsche 99X Electric and introduces major gains in power, aerodynamics, and efficiency as Formula E enters a new phase of development.
Porsche introduces 975 RSE as Formula E enters Gen4 era
The Porsche Formula E Gen4 regulations represent the biggest performance leap in the championship’s history, with the new cars producing up to 600 kW of power in Attack Mode and featuring permanent all-wheel drive.
According to Porsche Motorsport Vice President Thomas Laudenbach, the evolution of electric racing has reached a new level. He said, “The GEN4 shows how far electric vehicles have evolved. When the championship started in 2014, every driver needed two cars per race. One battery alone was not enough to cover the full race distance. Those days are long gone. Since 2024, we have been developing a race car that puts us on the level of Formula 2 cars. EVs are not only catching up with the standards we are used to; their strengths are becoming increasingly evident – on the track and on the road.”
With top speeds expected to exceed 330 km/h and acceleration from 0–100 km/h in approximately 1.8 seconds, the 975 RSE places Formula E firmly among the fastest single-seater categories. Porsche ’s preparations for the upcoming new Formula E generation of challengers, Gen4 reflects a clear focus on balancing efficiency with outright performance.
Increased downforce and efficiency shape Porsche’s Gen4 challenger
One of the defining changes for the Gen4 era is the introduction of significantly increased aerodynamic downforce, allowing for higher cornering speeds and improved overall grip.
Olivier Champenois explained the importance of balancing performance with efficiency. He said, “Within roughly a decade, Formula E has become so fast that aerodynamic downforce is now a necessity. However, downforce always comes with drag and increases energy consumption. To maintain a strong focus on efficiency, we use two different aero packages with distinct bodywork components: a low-downforce package with reduced drag for the races, and a high-downforce package for qualifying, where energy consumption isn’t relevant. We are talking about up to 150 percent more downforce compared to the GEN3 Evo.”
The 975 RSE also reflects extensive in-house development, with Porsche focusing on weight reduction, durability, and cost efficiency alongside performance gains.
Performance gains underline a major step forward for Formula E
Compared to its predecessor, the new car delivers 71 percent more peak power while maintaining the high efficiency levels that define Formula E.
Florian Modlinger emphasised how these improvements will impact racing. He said, “The concept remains the same: the regulations force us to maximise the efficiency of our cars in every respect – because that makes us relevant for the road. The races should become even more attractive, as the new cars are considerably faster. The acceleration is impressive, and we expect top speeds of up to 335 km/h. I’m very curious to see how the fans will react.”
With energy recovery of up to 700 kW and drivetrain efficiency already exceeding 97 percent in previous generations, the Gen4 car represents a major technical milestone.
Porsche drivers react to the 975 RSE
The new Porsche Formula E Gen4 car has already left a strong impression on its drivers. Porsche’s factory drivers have already experienced the new car and highlighted its performance and driving characteristics.
Pascal Wehrlein described the 975 RSE as an exciting evolution, saying, “The new Porsche 975 RSE is a really cool race car. The GEN4 is extremely fast and great fun for us drivers. I believe it will be a real eye-opener for many fans and critics. I also like the look of the 975 RSE. The aerodynamics make the car look uncompromising, and our livery for the test runs looks pretty good.”
Meanwhile, Nico Müller highlighted the aggressive driving potential of the new package. He added, “The 975 RSE and its competitors are a massive step forward for the sport. I’m a big fan of how aggressively you can drive. Especially in qualifying, when everyone is pushing to the limit, it should be spectacular – particularly because of the strong acceleration out of the corners.”
Porsche prepares for Gen4 debut as Formula E evolves
The Porsche 975 RSE is expected to make its competitive debut in December, following further development and testing ahead of homologation.
As the reigning Formula E Manufacturers’ World Champion, Porsche enters the Gen4 era aiming to build on its recent success while continuing to push the boundaries of electric performance.
The 975 RSE represents not only a technological leap but also a clear statement of intent as the championship moves into its next chapter.
