Opel has unveiled its Formula E Gen4 prototype, the GSE 27FE, signalling a major step forward as the manufacturer prepares for its entry into the championship’s next era.
Opel has officially presented its Gen4 Formula E prototype, the Opel GSE 27FE, during a world premiere at Circuit Paul Ricard, marking a key milestone in the brand’s motorsport strategy.
The unveiling offers the first glimpse into Opel’s future in Formula E. The new prototype combines performance, design innovation, and road-relevant technology ahead of its competitive debut.
Opel introduces GSE 27FE as Formula E enters Gen4 era
The Opel GSE 27FE has been developed for the upcoming Gen4 regulations. It features permanent all-wheel drive, more than 800 hp, and energy recuperation of up to 700 kW.
Speaking at the launch, Rebecca Reinermann outlined the brand’s direction and ambitions. She said, “We have a clear strategy with Opel GSE: Race. Drive. Play. And 2026 is clearly dominated by racing. We are showing how exciting and at the same time relevant electric performance is for and at Opel.”
Meanwhile, with the Gen4 era set to introduce the biggest performance leap in Formula E, Opel is positioning the GSE 27FE as both a racing platform and a development tool for future road cars.
GSE 27FE combines performance with development focus
Beyond outright performance, Opel has emphasised the role of the GSE 27FE as a technological accelerator.
Jörg Schrott highlighted this dual purpose, explaining how the prototype goes beyond traditional motorsport objectives. He said, “What we are unveiling today is much more than a prototype. The Opel GSE 27FE is a strategic technology accelerator for our development in series production and GSE performance models in particular.”
The preparation programme reflects this ambition, with extensive testing planned across multiple European circuits as the team works to refine performance ahead of the new season.
Design language reflects speed and performance identity
Meanwhile, the GSE 27FE also introduces a distinctive design philosophy aimed at visually conveying speed and performance.
It features Opel’s ‘Lightspeed’ graphics and signature yellow accents. As a result, the car connects the brand’s motorsport heritage with a modern electric identity.
Pierre-Olivier Garcia explained the thinking behind the design approach. He said, “With the design of the Opel GSE 27FE, we want to make speed and performance unmistakably visible even before our GEN4 race car hits the track. ‘OMG! in a blink’ perfectly describes this intent: immediate effect, maximum presence and the focused energy of modern electric racing.”
Looking ahead, the final design is expected to be revealed later this year, ahead of the car’s competitive debut.
Sophia Flörsch begins development work on Opel Gen4 prototype
Sophia Flörsch became the first driver to take the GSE 27FE onto the track, completing initial running at Paul Ricard as part of the development programme.
Reflecting on the experience, she described the car as a major step forward in electric racing performance. She said, “After initial tests in the simulator, to drive here for the first time in Opel’s Formula E GEN4 race car is an indescribable moment. The brutal torque, this completely new performance – it feels like the future of motorsport, and I’m ready to push the limits.”
Her role will continue to be central as Opel progresses through simulator work and on-track testing in preparation for the new season.
Opel positions Formula E at the centre of GSE strategy
The unveiling of the GSE 27FE highlights Opel’s broader commitment to using Formula E as a platform for its performance sub-brand.
In the context of Opel Formula E Gen4, the project brings together racing, technology, and brand identity. As a result, it reinforces the role of electric motorsport in shaping future road cars.
As the Gen4 era approaches, Opel’s entry adds another competitive and technical dimension to the championship, with the GSE 27FE representing both a performance statement and a long-term strategic investment.
