Dayton Coulthard returned to the GB4 grid with Douglas Motorsport for the opening race of the 2026 season at Silverstone. In a race that featured multiple on-track battles and position changes, he worked his way through the field while managing the challenges typically associated with the first race of a new campaign. His performance included several overtaking moves and a sustained battle with familiar competitors, contributing to a strong result for the team.

Following the race, Coulthard, while speaking to GB4 discussed his approach to navigating the opening laps, the dynamics of racing in close proximity to other drivers, and the technical considerations that influenced his performance throughout the event.

Coulthard on managing a chaotic 2026 GB4 season opener at Silverstone

Coulthard began by outlining his expectations heading into the race, noting the unpredictability that often defines the opening round of a season. With a tightly packed field and limited recent race conditions, he focused on maintaining control and avoiding unnecessary risks while progressing through the order.

“It was always going to be chaos, first race of the year, so it was just kind of trying to keep it on the tarmac and make my way through.”

This approach allowed him to remain consistent during the early stages, where incidents and close racing created opportunities for position gains.

Close battle with a familiar rival

During the race, Coulthard engaged in a sustained battle with former teammate Enzo Hallman. The two drivers exchanged positions through different sections of the circuit, demonstrating controlled and respectful racing while pushing for position.

Coulthard reflected on the nature of this battle, particularly the added challenge of racing closely with a driver he knows well. He also highlighted the importance of avoiding contact in such situations.

“Yeah, no, we get along great, so the biggest nightmare would be crashing into each other. But it’s quite hard to follow each other when it’s here, a high-speed track. There’s quite a lot of air wash, so it really gets a bit ballsy, we’ll say, at times. But yeah, it was good.”

He explained that the high-speed nature of the circuit made close following difficult, requiring careful judgement when attempting overtakes.

Technical factors and car setup

In addition to on-track battles, Coulthard also addressed technical considerations that influenced performance. He referred to the team’s approach to car preparation, including decisions aimed at optimising weight.

“Well, as much as it looks nice, it’s about weight, so that’s our weight saving. There’s a bit of weight in the vinyl.”

Coulthard’s return with Douglas Motorsport marked a continuation of an existing working relationship. His performance in the opening race demonstrated familiarity with the team environment, as well as an ability to adapt quickly to race conditions at the start of the season.

By combining controlled race management with competitive racecraft, he secured a result that provides a foundation for the remainder of the race weekend and the broader championship campaign.
